Trapped in a 5-Second Future: A Landlord's Cold War Trap in Arlington
👉 [Previous Decision]: You are continuing from CHAPTER 15.
The air-raid sirens continued to wail across Arlington, a chilling reminder of the world teetering on the brink. Just as Clara finished another round of chest compressions, the heavy metal door to the stairwell burst open.
Martha Gable, the local Arlington housing board representative, rushed into the sub-basement, her face a mixture of alarm and indignation. Behind her, two local police officers, drawn by the electrical blackout and the public smear notices Holloway had plastered across the neighborhood, followed cautiously, their hands on their holsters.
They stopped dead, their eyes widening at the chaotic scene. Smoke filled the air, sparks still danced from the ruined console, and the shattered CRT screens pulsed with dying green light. In the center of it all, Clara Higgins, the woman Holloway had publicly accused of being a mentally unstable Cold War security threat, was performing life-saving chest compressions on Colonel Richard Holloway himself.
Martha Gable pointed, her voice a gasp. “Mrs. Higgins! What in the world—”
Sergeant Kincaid, who had just managed to connect a faint signal on his field radio to report the medical emergency, quickly stepped forward, holding up Clara’s bank ledger and Dr. Aris’s secret testing logs from 1951. His face was grim, his voice steady.
“Officer! Ms. Gable! Colonel Holloway’s accusations are false! Mrs. Higgins is a hero. These logs prove she spent her own money for wounded veterans’ care. And these…” Kincaid pointed to the charred remains of the main console, then to the images of Holloway’s son still flickering on the failing screens. “…these are the real secrets. This is an unauthorized, illegal experiment. His son died in a similar trial in 1951.”
The police officers exchanged a stunned look. Martha Gable, who had arrived ready to reprimand Clara for “erratic behavior,” now stood frozen, her eyes wide with shock. The truth, meticulously hidden by Holloway, was now laid bare for everyone to see. The public smear campaign, meant to destroy Clara, had inadvertently led to Holloway’s own exposure.
Clara continued her compressions, her brow furrowed in concentration. She could hear the sirens outside, the crackle of Kincaid’s radio reporting a “major incident, unauthorized military installation, medical emergency.” Holloway groaned beneath her hands, his eyes fluttering open again, meeting hers. The look in them was not anger, but a profound, overwhelming sorrow and regret.
The external crisis of the Cold War had crashed into Holloway’s internal torment, exposing a truth far more complex than a simple landlord dispute. Clara had not sought this confrontation, but her unwavering compassion had forced it into the light.
