Trapped in a 5-Second Future: A Landlord's Cold War Trap in Arlington
👉 [Previous Decision]: You chose Option A – Demand that Dr. Aris explain the system’s mechanical delay over the intercom.
Clara pushed herself up from the floor, the metallic scent of ozone thick in the air. She walked directly to the reinforced glass observation window, placing her palms against its cool surface. The static-filled screens around her showed nothing now, just a dull, flickering green.
“Dr. Aris!” Clara’s voice was hoarse, but she projected it with all the force she could muster. “Explain this! Explain the lag! You said it read my actions five seconds ahead, but now you’re talking about psychological parameters!”
A flustered voice crackled through the intercom, clearly Dr. Aris. “Madam, the… the predictive algorithms don’t precisely ‘read’ the future. They… they track subconscious, subcutaneous muscle tremors. Micro-expressions! Calibrated to your unique biometric stress responses!”
Clara pressed her face closer to the glass. “My stress responses? What does my caretaking have to do with this military experiment?”
“Your… your extensive history as a nurse, Mrs. Higgins,” Aris stammered, his voice climbing in pitch. “Your decades of self-sacrifice, the constant emotional strain… it creates a remarkably clear and predictable pattern of physiological response under duress. The system anticipates your panic by synthesizing those learned patterns!”
Clara blinked. Her entire life, dedicated to others, had been reduced to “predictable patterns” for this man’s twisted science. The idea made her stomach clench.
Before she could respond, a sharp crackle cut Aris off. Colonel Holloway’s voice, tight with fury, replaced Aris’s. “That’s enough, Doctor! Get back to your console! Maintain operational security!”
The intercom clicked off, leaving Clara in silence, surrounded by the humming, inert screens. Holloway’s face appeared briefly in the observation window, his jaw clenched, eyes narrowed to slits. He was furious that Aris had let slip so much.
Clara slowly drew her hand away from the glass. Subcutaneous muscle tremors. Emotional patterns. Holloway wasn’t just observing her; he was exploiting her past, using her very empathy as a tool against her. The full, cold realization settled over her. This wasn’t a random landlord dispute. It was a calculated, personal attack.
She turned away from the glass, her gaze sweeping the room. The smooth, seamless walls, the hidden ventilation shafts, the oppressive silence. She had broken the illusion of the future, but she was still very much trapped. Holloway knew her now, perhaps better than she knew herself, and he would use that knowledge.
The silence of the room felt heavier than before. Clara knew she had just gained a crucial piece of information, a secret about the system’s core function. But it had come at a cost, making Holloway even more dangerous. She had to find a way to use this new insight.
