Chapter 13: Rain on the Empty Porch

The old Oakhaven Historical Archive smelled like dust and forgotten paper, a comfortingly static scent after the chaos of the morning. I carried Chloe’s journal, wrapped in a plastic bag, under my arm. The stray cat, which I’d decided to call “Shadow” for now, was curled in a borrowed box seat of my pickup truck, sleeping through the pouring rain outside.

Gideon Finch, the town archivist, looked up from a microfiche machine, his glasses halfway down his nose. “Leo Bennet. Didn’t think I’d see you out and about after… well.”

He didn’t finish the sentence, but the implication hung heavy: after Clara died, after the quiet grief that had settled over me for eight months.

“Just looking for some old property records, Gideon,” I said, trying to keep my voice even.

He nodded, already pushing himself from his chair. “You know where they are. Anything in particular?”

“The old timber dump, behind the high school. Around this time last year.”

He gestured vaguely. “Take your pick. Just be careful with the ledgers.”

I found a stack of property transfer records from the previous fall. Chloe’s journal entries detailed her last known movements around October 14th. I needed to see who owned what, when.

My fingers traced down the dense columns of names and dates. The air was cool in the archive, the silence broken only by the hum of ancient fluorescent lights.

Then I saw it. “Timber Dump, Parcel 3B, Oakhaven Township.”

The acquisition date was October 17th. Three days after Chloe Danforth vanished.

The buyer: Arthur Kincaid.

A cold knot tightened in my stomach. Arthur hadn’t owned that land when Chloe disappeared there. He had bought it *after*. Why? What was so important about that specific, isolated patch of dirt that he snapped it up just after a missing person case linked to it?

This wasn’t just about a legal summons for a lost diary. This was deeper. Arthur wasn’t just defending his estate; he was actively concealing something related to Chloe’s disappearance itself.

I grabbed a notebook from my bag, careful to keep Chloe’s journal out of sight, and scrawled down the deed information. Gideon was back at his microfiche, oblivious.

Back at my truck, Shadow blinked awake, stretching its paws. I had just buckled up when a sleek, black sedan pulled up behind me, blocking me in.

A man in a sharp suit, holding a crisp manila envelope, stepped out into the rain. He didn’t introduce himself.

“Mr. Leo Bennet?” he asked, his voice flat.

I just stared at him.

He handed me the envelope. “This is a formal Notice of Intent to Audit the estate assets of Clara Kincaid-Bennet, specifically concerning all items found on the property designated as Kincaid Land Trust 12B.”

He paused, adjusting his tie. “The audit will commence tomorrow morning at 9 AM, at your residence.”

My residence. The house Arthur had given us. The house Clara and I had made a home. He wasn’t just trying to get the diary back. He was trying to dismantle my life.

“Any interference will be considered obstruction,” the man added, his eyes devoid of warmth.

He turned, got back into his car, and drove away, leaving me trapped between the rain and a looming legal attack. Shadow let out a low growl from the passenger seat, its fur bristling.
