My phone buzzed in my hand as I walked toward my truck, the digital image of the wire transfer burning on the screen. The evidence was irrefutable. I could take this to Sheriff Holt, lay it all out. Arthur Kincaid’s carefully constructed facade was about to crumble.

But before I could even open my truck door, a familiar black-and-white patrol car pulled up to the curb. Sheriff Marcus Holt sat behind the wheel, his usual calm demeanor replaced by a rigid set to his jaw. Beside him, in the passenger seat, was Arthur’s corporate attorney – the same man who had served me the estate audit notice.

My stomach dropped. This wasn’t a friendly visit.

Sheriff Holt stepped out, his gaze heavy. He was a good man, always fair, but I knew he walked a delicate line with Arthur Kincaid, who practically owned half the town.

“Leo,” he said, his voice flat, devoid of its usual warmth.

Arthur’s attorney got out too, holding another one of those pristine manila envelopes. This one felt even more menacing.

“Mr. Bennet,” the attorney began, his voice cold and precise. “Pursuant to the ongoing estate audit and the violations of the Criminal Trespass Order, the Oakhaven County Court has issued an Emergency Injunction and Order of Eviction.”

He extended the envelope. I took it, my fingers numb. The words swam on the page: *Immediate Vacancy. Seizure of Property. Unlawful Occupancy.*

“You have two hours, Mr. Bennet,” the attorney continued, glancing at his expensive wristwatch. “Two hours to pack your personal belongings. Anything left inside after that time will be considered property of the Kincaid estate.”

He held out a hand. “Your house key, please.”

My breath hitched. My house. The one Clara and I had picked out, the one filled with her books, her artwork, her scent. Arthur was taking it all. Not just the diary, not just the investigation. Everything.

“You can’t do this,” I managed, my voice raspy. “I live here. This is my home.”

Sheriff Holt shifted uncomfortably. “It’s a court order, Leo. There’s nothing I can do.” His eyes, however, held a flicker of something close to sympathy.

“This is harassment,” I insisted, my voice rising. “I have proof Arthur Kincaid wired a hundred and fifty thousand dollars to an offshore account the night Chloe Danforth disappeared. He’s trying to silence me!”

The attorney simply raised an eyebrow, a dismissive smirk playing on his lips. “Any such ‘proof,’ Mr. Bennet, can be submitted through proper legal channels. In the meantime, this order stands.”

He pointed to the house. “Two hours. Hand over the key, or we’ll be forced to escort you.”

The threat was clear. Resistance would only escalate things. My only hope was the evidence on my phone. I still had it. They hadn’t confiscated that.

With a heavy heart, I reached into my pocket, pulled out my house keys, and separated the main house key from the rest. It felt like I was handing over a piece of my soul.

The attorney snatched it from my hand. “Thank you. Deputies will be here in one hundred and twenty minutes to ensure compliance.”

He turned and got back into the black sedan. Sheriff Holt gave me one last, regretful look before following him.

I stood on the curb, watching my house, the setting sun casting long, mocking shadows across its familiar facade. Two hours. My entire life, reduced to a two-hour scramble. Shadow, who had been sleeping soundly in the truck, let out a distressed whine. Arthur wasn’t playing games. He was using every legal weapon he had to bury me, and the truth, for good.
