A ruined former police K9 officer turned hospital auditor faces her ruthless billionaire father-in-law, using a secret tactical command to turn his $500,000 security dog against him in a high-stake...
The Doberman sprang forward, a dark blur of muscle and fury. Its bared teeth were aimed for my throat, a guttural snarl ripping from its chest. Dr. Arthur Bainbridge watched, a cold, satisfied smirk tightening his lips. Julian, my estranged husband, stood frozen beside him, a pale, useless shadow.
I lifted the small, slender whistle, a familiar weight in my hand, and blew a single, sharp burst of high-frequency sound.
It was almost imperceptible to the human ear, but to a trained K9, it was a thunderclap.
The Doberman, mid-leap, twisted unnaturally in the air. Its trajectory shifted, its focus snapped away from me as if yanked by an invisible leash.
A yelp of pure shock tore from Julian’s throat as the 90-pound animal landed on him instead. The Doberman’s massive paws slammed into his chest, pinning him against the ornate Persian rug. Its powerful jaws closed, not on his flesh, but on the collar of his expensive jacket, holding him rigid.
Julian thrashed, a pathetic sound, muffled by the Doberman’s low growl directly above his face.
Arthur’s smug expression dissolved instantly. His eyes, usually so commanding, widened with disbelief.
“What in God’s name?!” he roared, taking an involuntary step back from the mahogany desk.
This was my window. I moved, my former LAPD training kicking in. Every second Julian was pinned was a second I gained.
“Back away from the desk, Arthur,” I commanded, my voice flat, devoid of emotion. I kept my gaze fixed on him, my hand hovering over the heavy brass lamp on the desk, a silent threat.
He stumbled backward, bumping into a towering bookshelf. A rare first edition clattered precariously. His face was a mask of confusion, then rage.
“That animal… it was trained to protect *me*!” Arthur hissed, pointing a trembling finger at the Doberman, which still held Julian captive.
“It was trained by the K9 facility on Mesa Road,” I replied, my voice carrying just enough to be heard over Julian’s panicked whimpers. “The same one I oversaw during my time with the force.”
Arthur’s jaw dropped. The Doberman, still holding Julian, let out another deep, satisfied growl. The subtle, tactical command, a secret sequence only known by a few handlers and trainers from that specific kennel, had bypassed all other programming. The animal now saw Julian as the threat, and me as its primary handler.
Julian, trapped beneath the animal, let out a choked sound. “Father, do something!”
Arthur, however, was still staring at me, a new, unsettling understanding dawning in his eyes.
