The room fell silent except for Julian’s labored breathing and the Doberman’s low, rumbling growl. Briggs, a man whose presence usually felt as solid and unyielding as granite, stood framed in the doorway, his eyes sweeping from the Doberman to Arthur, then to me. The weapon in his hand seemed too casual, too ready.

“Sergeant Briggs,” Arthur finally managed, his voice regaining a semblance of authority despite the chaos. “Restrain this woman and secure my property. And then, that animal needs to be… dealt with.”

Briggs’s gaze lingered on the Doberman, then on me. He said nothing, his face a mask.

“Briggs,” I said, my voice cutting through the tension, “this dog, ‘Titan’ – that’s his real name, isn’t it? He’s from the Mesa Road facility. He’s a working animal. He deserved better than to be used in this charade.”

Briggs’s eyes flickered, a subtle shift. He was a former military working dog handler, a man who understood the bond and the ethics. He knew the Mesa Road facility’s reputation, and mine.

“You really trained there?” Briggs asked, his voice a low rumble, devoid of inflection. He wasn’t addressing Arthur. He was addressing me.

“I helped set up the K9 program Arthur sourced Titan from,” I confirmed. “I know these animals. I know what they’re capable of, and what they deserve.”

Arthur bristled. “Briggs, I gave you an order! That dog is compromised! Useless!”

“Compromised because he followed a superior handler’s command?” I challenged, not looking away from Briggs. “Or because he realized he was being used as a disposable weapon?”

Briggs’s hand tightened slightly on his weapon, but he didn’t raise it. His eyes finally locked with Arthur’s, a slow, dawning disgust spreading across his face.

“He told me to put the dog down tonight, ma’am,” Briggs said, his voice quiet, almost regretful, still directed at me. “After he’d finished intimidating you. He said the animal couldn’t be trusted again.”

Arthur sputtered, “That’s a lie! You’re insubordinate, Briggs!”

I felt a surge of cold fury. This man truly saw everything and everyone as disposable.

“He was hired to intimidate me into signing away my son’s rights and his medical future,” I explained, letting the raw anger tint my voice. “And then Arthur planned to have him eliminated for doing his job too well. Just like he planned to cut off my son’s life-saving insurance.”

Briggs’s shoulders slumped almost imperceptibly. He looked at the powerful Doberman, which still held Julian’s jacket, its intelligent eyes watching them all. He loved these animals. I could see it.

Slowly, deliberately, Briggs lowered his weapon. The click of the safety going back on echoed loudly in the tense silence.

“You’re right, ma’am,” Briggs said, his voice firmer now. “This isn’t how it works. Not for these animals.”

He reached into his tactical vest, not for another weapon, but for a small, innocuous flash drive. He held it out to me.

“These are the hospital’s confidential DNA sequencing logs,” he stated, his voice flat. “And proof of every ‘system error’ that kept children out of trials.”

Arthur shrieked, “Briggs! You traitor!”

But Briggs didn’t flinch. He just watched me, waiting for me to take the drive.
