The scent of scorched marble still hung faintly in the air, a phantom reminder of the chandelier’s catastrophic descent. My heart hammered against my ribs, but a cold resolve settled over me as I watched Eleanor Gable’s fury contort her usually composed features. The remaining gala guests, a scattering of shocked faces and hushed whispers, avoided our gaze.

“You will be quiet, Elena,” Eleanor hissed, her voice a low, dangerous rumble that barely reached me, though her eyes were sharp daggers.

She took a step toward me, her silk gown rustling like dry leaves.

But the image of the shattered crystal, the exact spot where I had stood moments before, burned behind my eyelids. And Leo’s scream echoed.

“No,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady. “Someone could have died.”

I turned, addressing the pale, shaken faces of the Hudson Valley Heritage Board members who were still scrambling to contain the chaos. Their faces, usually puffed with self-importance, now looked like deflated balloons.

“This entire estate needs to be locked down,” I announced, my voice cutting through the stunned silence. “Effective immediately. A full, independent structural inspection must be conducted.”

A tall, grey-haired man, Mr. Abernathy, cleared his throat. “Ms. Alder, this is a terrible accident, but—”

“An accident?” I interrupted, stepping forward. “A three-hundred-pound crystal chandelier doesn’t just ‘accidentally’ fall from a ceiling that’s supposed to be regularly inspected by your society.”

Eleanor let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. “She’s hysterical. Look at her, demanding a freeze on operations. It’s an insult to the Gable legacy!”

Her words, intended to dismiss, only fueled my anger. I pointed toward the gaping hole in the ballroom ceiling.

“That hole is your legacy, Eleanor,” I shot back. “And it almost killed me and my unborn child.”

Leo, still clinging to my leg, looked up at me, his eyes wide and unblinking. His small hand squeezed my thigh.

The board members exchanged nervous glances. They were more accustomed to managing historical plaques than potential manslaughter.

Mr. Abernathy, clearly out of his depth, stammered, “We… we understand your concern, Ms. Alder. Of course, safety is paramount. We will consider—”

“Consider?” I pressed, stepping closer to him. “No. You will freeze operations tonight. Or I will go to every news outlet in the Hudson Valley with Leo’s story. And then, it won’t be just a structural inspection you’re dealing with. It will be a criminal investigation.”

His face paled further. The threat of a media circus was far more terrifying to them than any structural defect.

Eleanor stepped forward, her hand reaching for my arm, but I recoiled.

“You wouldn’t dare,” she seethed, her eyes narrowed to slits. “You’re a guest. An interloper.”

“I’m a survivor,” I corrected, pulling Leo closer. “And I have a six-year-old witness.”

The board, faced with an immediate public relations disaster, capitulated. The estate, a monument to their prestige, would be locked down. A notice was drafted on the spot, its hurried language betraying their panic.

As I walked out, the air was suddenly charged with Eleanor’s silent, incandescent rage. Her gaze, burning into my back, promised retribution far beyond what I could comprehend. I had poked the bear, and it was about to bite back with everything it had.

I knew this was far from over.
