The heavy brass knob clicked, and Major Alex Gentry pushed the study door open. He stepped inside, a faint cologne scent preceding him, followed closely by Chloe Albright, who held a delicate teacup with a manicured hand. Her gaze swept over the stack of folders on the polished mahogany desk where I stood.

My hands, still slightly damp from washing her breakfast dishes, gripped the edges of a legal pad.

“So, we’re ready, Maya?” Alex’s voice was smooth, a practiced charm that used to fool me. “The deeds, as requested.”

I nodded once, a movement almost imperceptible. My eyes met Chloe’s for a fraction of a second. She wore a silk robe, expensive and flowing, completely out of place on a military base. A faint smirk played on her lips.

“Don’t make this difficult,” Chloe said, her voice thin and sharp. She adjusted the robe over her shoulder. “We wouldn’t want any unfortunate… paperwork delays for your brother’s care, would we?”

The mention of Leo tightened a knot in my stomach. Alex had frozen the direct payment channel to his hospital account two days ago. He believed he had me cornered.

“No delays,” I said, my voice flat. I reached for the stack of manila envelopes on the desk. They looked authentic enough. Forged property papers, meticulously detailed. My real family inheritance deeds, the ones he wanted, were safe, hidden miles away.

As I pushed the stack across the desk toward Alex, my left hand, hidden beneath the desk’s edge, moved with practiced speed. My thumb found the small, almost invisible button on the side of my wrist communicator. A silent, encrypted data burst left my device, aimed directly at Captain O’Connell’s secure JAG terminal.

It was the full, unredacted logistics audit. Every falsified receipt. Every ghost shipment. Every inflated invoice. The entire $4.8 million paper trail, meticulously compiled over months.

Alex didn’t notice. He was already flipping through the dummy deeds, a satisfied hum rumbling in his chest. His fingers traced the embossed seal on the top document.

“Excellent,” he murmured, a predatory glint in his eyes. “Good girl, Maya. See how easy this can be when you cooperate?”

Chloe leaned in, her eyes narrowed. She picked up a stray piece of lint from Alex’s pristine dress uniform. “Are these all of them? No tricks?”

“Every last one,” I lied, my gaze steady. I felt the faint vibration on my wrist, confirming the data transfer was complete. The audit was out. The first domino was down.

Alex held up a document titled “Lindqvist Family Estate Trust, Section C.” He gave a triumphant smile. “Perfect. This secures everything. Now, if you’ll excuse us, Chloe and I have a reception to prepare for.”

He waved a dismissive hand, already turning away. Chloe followed, casting one last disdainful look over her shoulder. The door clicked shut again, leaving me alone in the silent, ornate study.

The air felt thin. My heart hammered, a frantic drum against my ribs. The papers I’d handed over were worthless, but the data I’d sent was a military death sentence. The game had just changed.
