The roar of the crowd intensified as I neared the promotion hall. I could hear Alex’s voice, amplified, booming from inside the auditorium. He was starting his speech. My heart pounded against my ribs, a frantic rhythm.

I burst through a fire door, finding myself in a stark, utilitarian corridor backstage. The walls were cinder block, painted institutional beige. A lone janitor pushed a cart slowly, oblivious to the drama unfolding.

Just ahead, outside a heavy, unmarked door labeled “STAGE HOLDING – AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY,” stood Captain Julian O’Connell. He was talking in hushed, urgent tones with a junior MP officer. O’Connell spotted me, his eyes widening slightly, a flicker of relief and grim determination crossing his face.

He dismissed the MP with a sharp nod, then turned to me, a thick manila envelope held discreetly against his side. The MP saluted and moved off down the corridor, leaving us alone.

“Maya,” O’Connell said, his voice low and strained. He handed me the envelope. “The warrant. It’s all there. Signed by General Davies himself. For immediate military arrest and detention.”

The paper felt heavy in my hands, official, damning. The military seal, crisp and black, seemed to hum with authority.

“He’s inside, isn’t he?” I asked, nodding toward the heavy door.

O’Connell nodded grimly. “Just finished his speech. They’re waiting for Admiral Vance to present the insignia. The room will clear out in a few minutes before the reception. It’s the only window we have. This room provides soundproofing, limited access.”

“You did it, Captain,” I said, my voice thick with a mix of gratitude and the leaden despair for Leo.

“We did it,” he corrected, a tired smile touching his lips. He glanced at the envelope in my hands. “Just remember, Maya. This is absolute. No negotiations. He’ll try to talk his way out of it.”

“He won’t have a chance,” I promised, my grip tightening on the envelope.

O’Connell stepped back, his posture stiffening, almost as if he were disassociating from the moment. He ran a hand over his close-cropped hair. “I’ll wait out here. If you need me, signal. But this… this needs to be you.”

He glanced past my shoulder toward the distant sounds of applause. “His career, everything, is tied to his public image. A private arrest, before the cameras, before the official promotion… it’s the only way to contain the fallout. For the service.”

I nodded, understanding the unspoken implications. A public spectacle would tarnish the entire chain of command. A quiet, decisive arrest would be contained.

I turned to the heavy door. My hand reached for the cold metal handle. I could hear the faint, muffled sounds of the ceremony, the lingering applause. Alex was in there, still basking in his moment of triumph.

My own triumph felt hollow, tainted by the two-hour delay I’d initiated for Leo. But there was no turning back. This was it. The final confrontation. Just Alex and me.
