Julian arrived at Aegis Governance Group before dawn, the K Street lamps still humming with artificial light. He positioned himself by the employee coffee station, nursing a lukewarm paper cup, his eyes sweeping across the polished lobby. He was looking for any anomaly, any flicker of recognition from the few early arrivals.

Evelyn Ross, Arthur Pendelton’s senior executive assistant, rounded the corner. Her arms were laden with folders, and her heels clicked sharply on the marble floor. She was a woman of precise movements, rarely flustered.

Then, a sudden wobble. A stack of encrypted clearance files tumbled from her grasp, scattering across the floor near Julian’s feet.

I knelt, reaching for the scattered papers. My hand brushed hers as we both reached for a folder labeled “Project Chimera – Sub-Level 4.”

“You look like you saw a ghost yesterday, Julian,” Evelyn whispered, her voice barely audible above the quiet hum of the air conditioning. Her eyes darted quickly towards the ceiling, where a small, unobtrusive security camera rotated slowly.

My breath hitched. She knew. She knew about the note.

“Did your daytime self finally leave you a note?” she added, her gaze locking onto mine for a fleeting second before she quickly looked away.

A cold certainty settled in my stomach. The “severance” wasn’t memory erasure; it was a split. My workday self, Work-Julian, had been fighting Arthur from the inside.

Evelyn gathered the last of her files, her hand slipping something small and cool into my palm as she stood. It was an analog keycard, older and thicker than the standard digital ones.

“Security patrols refresh their sweep at 10:30 AM,” she murmured, her face a mask of polite indifference as a junior analyst walked past. “That stairwell bypasses the primary dampeners.”

I watched her walk away, her back straight and unwavering, the keycard a small, potent weight in my hand.
