At precisely 10:31 AM, I slipped the analog keycard into the reader beside an unmarked steel door in the deepest corner of the third sub-floor parking garage. The indicator light glowed green, and the heavy door hissed inward, revealing a dimly lit concrete stairwell.

The air grew heavy and cold as I descended, stepping out of the primary neural-dampening sensor range. A violent, searing migraine bloomed behind my eyes, sending jagged flashes of light across my vision. Fragments of suppressed work memories, like shattered glass, tried to pierce through the mental fog. A face, a number, a spreadsheet. They were just out of reach.

I paused on a landing, pressing my forehead against the cool concrete wall. My hand found a faded security map tacked to the wall, dating back to Aegis’s original construction. It displayed two pathways from this point: one arrow pointed directly down, marked “Sub-Level 4 – Server Core – Restricted Access.” The other pointed up, labeled “Executive Suites – Top Floor.”

Evelyn’s voice crackled, distorted, through the short-range radio she had given me with the keycard. “He’s watching the elevator logs, Julian. Security patrols refresh their sweep in exactly six minutes. Make your choice.”

My heart pounded against my ribs, a frantic drum against the encroaching headache. Sub-Level 4 held the voter redaction software. Arthur’s executive suite held his personal client ledger, his secrets. Both were vital. Both were dangerous.
