Chapter 14: Shadows in the Quiet

The red light from the device throbbed against my palm, a frantic pulse against the quiet hum of the manor’s electricity. Victoria’s shrill voice, still echoing in the garden from moments ago, felt like a distant memory, though it had barely been five minutes since I wrestled Toby’s backpack from the pool.

I pulled Toby and Lily into my bedroom, locking the heavy oak door behind us. Lily, small and still, clung to my leg, her eyes wide. Toby sat on my bed, staring at the soaked canvas backpack, his shoulders trembling.

“It’s okay, Toby,” I said, trying to steady my voice. “We’ll figure this out.”

The device, wrapped in Clara’s medical tape, lay on my desk. The tape felt cool and damp. My fingers worked quickly, peeling back the layers. Clara’s neat handwriting, “IF VICTORIA TOUCHES THIS, LISTEN TO TRACK 04 — CLARA,” faded slightly as the tape came away.

Beneath the tape, nestled in a waterproof sleeve, was the small telemetry unit. It had an old-school micro-SD card slot on its side. My heart hammered against my ribs. Clara had prepared for this.

I carefully removed a tiny silver-foil packet stuck to the back of the device. Inside was a micro-SD card, no bigger than my thumbnail.

My laptop was already open on my desk. My hands felt clumsy as I tried to insert the tiny card into the slot. Lily let out a soft whimper from beside me.

“Just a second, sweetie,” I murmured, my gaze fixed on the screen.

The card clicked into place. My laptop recognized it instantly. A folder popped up: “Clara_Files.” Inside, only one file stood out: “Track_04_Victoria_Rec.mp3.”

I clicked play.

The room, usually warm and familiar, suddenly felt arctic. A chill swept through, not from the open window, but from an unseen source. Toby gasped, his breath fogging visibly in the air. I saw my own breath plume out in front of me.

Then, Victoria’s voice filled the room, a low, guttural whisper I barely recognized. “Oh, my sweet Arthur… soon this will all be ours, truly mine. The tea… she sleeps so soundly after the tea… such a delicate thing, his first wife. Soon… soon the manor will be purified. Just as the old texts promised.”

The words hung in the frigid air, each one a hammer blow. My mother. She was talking about my mother. The bedside table. The “purification.”

Victoria’s confession, chilling and raw, echoed in my ears. I felt the blood drain from my face. She hadn’t just fired Clara; she had orchestrated my mother’s death. The temperature in the room plummeted further, cold enough to make my teeth chatter. The air crackled around us, thick with an unspoken, unseen presence.
