I stood my ground. The pre-filled syringe in Julian’s hand seemed to pulse with the dim barn light. His face was a mask of cold fury, but I didn’t flinch.

“You won’t do this,” I said, my voice low, cutting through the silence.

Julian took a step forward, his jaw tight. “Don’t be a fool, Maya. I have the papers. The injunctions. You’ll be ruined.”

He lunged then, a sudden, unexpected shove, aiming to physically push me out of the stallion’s way. The air crackled. The stallion, Kingmaker, had been agitated by Julian’s shouting, shifting nervously. Now, he let out a guttural snort, a deep rumble from his chest.

His powerful body tensed. I barely had time to brace myself.

Kingmaker reared back with a sudden, violent thrash of his head and forelegs. His hooves, usually so precise, struck out with raw, panicked power.

Julian, mid-lunge, was caught completely off guard. The stallion’s shoulder slammed into him, a glancing blow, but enough. Julian cried out, a sound of surprise and pain, as he was propelled backward.

He hit the stacked bales of feed hay with a dull thud. His expensive leather briefcase, clutched in his hand, flew from his grasp. It spun in the air, a dark blur against the dusty light, before hitting the concrete aisle with a sharp crack.

Papers, crisp legal documents, and what looked like a small, bound folder, exploded from its latches, scattering across the straw-strewn floor around Julian’s groaning form. The syringe, thankfully, skittered harmlessly away into the hay.

Kingmaker whinnied, a high-pitched, distressed sound, and continued to dance nervously in his stall. I could feel the tremor in the floorboards.

Julian lay sprawled, his navy suit rumpled, a thin line of blood already forming at his temple where he must have hit the edge of a hay bale. He blinked, disoriented, staring up at the barn ceiling.

The silence that followed was thick, broken only by Kingmaker’s heavy breathing and Julian’s pained grunts. The scattered papers, stark white against the yellow straw, seemed to glow in the fading light. My eyes locked on the small, bound folder, slightly thicker than the other documents, lying just inches from Julian’s outstretched hand.

It looked different. Important. And he hadn’t wanted me to see it.
