I pushed through the murmuring crowd, the damp smell of lilies and old hymn books thick in the air. Julian Kincaid, still at the podium, faltered mid-sentence. His eyes, wide and disbelieving, fixed on me.

My dress, borrowed from a kind nurse at the emergency room, felt like a costume. My arm throbbed, a dull ache beneath the bandage.

Detective Reyes, a solid presence beside me, held up a clear evidence bag. Inside it, a small, dark device.

“This,” Reyes’s voice cut through the stunned silence, “is the vehicle’s digital transmission module.”

A gasp rippled through the chapel. Flashbulbs erupted, scattering light like shrapnel. A reporter in the front pew dropped her pen, the clatter echoing too loudly.

Julian, ever the showman, regained his composure. He stepped away from the microphone, gesturing vaguely towards me.

“Nora,” he said, his voice laced with patronizing concern, “you’re disoriented. The trauma… it’s significant.”

He turned to the reporters, his smile a well-practiced mask. “My wife’s sister,” he explained, “is suffering from severe post-traumatic stress. She tragically believes…”

Reyes stepped forward, blocking Julian’s view of the press corps. His voice was calm, but unyielding.

“Ms. Delacroix is a witness,” he stated, “not a patient. This module contains telemetry data directly contradicting Mr. Kincaid’s version of events.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of something cold and dangerous replacing his fake sympathy. He tried to move past Reyes, towards the exit, but a uniformed officer subtly shifted, blocking his path.

“We have reason to believe this brake failure was no accident,” Reyes continued, holding the module higher. “This device was remotely accessed.”

The word “remotely” hung in the air, a venomous whisper. Julian’s jaw tightened.

“This is insane,” he muttered, loud enough for the closest reporters to hear. “Nora, you need help. You’re not thinking clearly.”

He took another step back, trying to vanish into the shadows behind the altar, but the cameras followed him. My mother, Evelyn, and my sister, Chloe, sat in the front row, pale and still. Chloe’s hand flew to her mouth. Evelyn just stared, her face a blank canvas. They had turned on me, taken Julian’s money. Now they just watched.

I locked eyes with Julian. This was just the beginning.
