After Marrying A Terminally Ill Billionaire Corporate Executive To Fulfill His Final Wish, A Grieving Director Uncovers Her Close Friend's $45 Million Betrayal Through Recovered Texts, Forcing A Qu...
The heavy oak door of my office clicked shut behind Richard Halloway. A chill, colder than the air conditioning, settled over the room. Chloe, my oldest friend, still stood near my desk, her face tight.
“You really want to play this game, Maya?” she asked, her voice low and sharp.
I clutched the heavy envelope in my hand. Julian’s elegant handwriting felt like a ghost against my palm.
“This isn’t a game, Chloe,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “This is Julian’s legacy. And my life.”
Chloe’s laugh was a short, bitter sound. She shook her head, a strand of her perfectly coiffed hair falling across her cheek. She didn’t bother to push it back.
“Fine. Have it your way.”
She stepped closer, her eyes locked on mine. Her usual warm gaze was replaced by something cold and calculating.
“But just so we’re clear,” she continued, her voice dropping to a whisper, “the board isn’t going to look kindly on someone who appears to have taken advantage of a dying man. Especially when that someone is a senior director with $45 million in new voting shares.”
My stomach tightened. The implication hung heavy in the air.
“I didn’t take advantage of anyone,” I countered, my voice cracking slightly. “Julian and I… we loved each other.”
Chloe raised an eyebrow, a dismissive flick of her wrist.
“Did you, now? Because to the outside world, it looks like a deathbed marriage followed by an immediate inheritance. You think that won’t make headlines?”
She spun on her heel, her gaze sweeping across my office, lingering on the photos of Julian and me on my desk. Her lips curled slightly.
“I’m calling an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning,” she announced, her voice louder now, meant to carry. “We need to address the… irregularities surrounding Julian’s estate and your sudden acquisition of control.”
A knot formed in my chest. This wasn’t just about the shares anymore. It was about my reputation, my entire career at Vantage.
“Chloe, don’t do this,” I pleaded, but she was already at the door.
She paused, her hand on the cold brass knob. She turned, a ghost of a smile playing on her lips.
“Consider it done,” she said, her voice devoid of any warmth I’d ever known. “And I’d advise you to think very carefully about what’s in that envelope. Some secrets are best left buried.”
With that, she exited, leaving the door ajar. The silence that followed was deafening. I walked to my office safe, my hands trembling slightly as I spun the dial. Julian’s letter, heavy with unspoken truths, slid into the cold, dark interior. I slammed the door shut, as if trying to trap Chloe’s threat inside as well.
