A final, gut-wrenching push tore through me, and then a strange, heavy silence. The world seemed to wobble. My body felt like it had been ripped open from the inside.

“He’s here,” someone whispered, but their voice sounded far away, as if submerged underwater.

I opened my eyes, struggling against the haze. There was so much blood. It painted the crisp white sheets, soaked into the plush delivery bed, a horrifying, blossoming stain.

My son, Little Tremaine Jr., lay limp on the midwife’s outstretched arms. He was blue. A deep, unsettling blue, not the healthy pink I had dreamed of.

No cry. Not a single sound.

The air in the room suddenly bristled with a new, frantic energy. A sharp, insistent beeping began to pierce the heavy silence, then another, louder, faster. My bio-telemetry monitor, once a quiet hum, screamed an alarm.

“No pulse!” a voice shrieked. It was Nurse Nia, her face pale, eyes wide with terror.

My own heart hammered against my ribs. I reached out, my fingers trembling. “My baby,” I croaked, the words raw and broken.

Tremaine, who had been focused on the camera at the corner of the room, turned. His eyes, usually so sharp and confident, were wide with a different kind of fear. Not for me, not for our son, but for the scene unfolding.

His gaze flickered from the blue baby to the pulsing red on my monitors, then to the camera lens.

“Cut the feed!” he yelled, his voice cracking. “Dice, cut the damn feed!”

Damon, still at the control panel near the nursery door, fumbled with a switch. The bright, professional lighting instantly died, plunging the room into a sudden, disorienting darkness. Only the emergency lights, casting long, eerie shadows, remained.

The alarms, however, kept blaring, echoing my own internal scream. Eighteen minutes. That’s how long they would later tell me my son lay there, without a pulse, in that silent, blood-soaked room, before they could even begin to revive him.
