Chapter 12: The Taste of Ashes

I launched myself forward, putting my body between Julian and Clara. My hands found the coarse mane of Citation, my prize stallion, a frantic shield.

“Sheriff Hendricks!” I roared, my voice ragged. “Get in here now!”

Julian lunged, surprisingly quick for his age, the leather rope swinging. He aimed for Clara, not the horse.

“Stay out of this, Arthur,” Julian snarled, his eyes glinting. “This is business.”

But Citation, convulsing and thrashing, let out a desperate whinny. His powerful hind leg shot out, a blur of muscle and hooves.

It caught Julian square in the chest.

Julian cried out, a guttural sound of surprise and pain, stumbling backward. His head smacked against the thick oak pillar of the stall with a sickening thud. He slid down, his hands splayed.

A small, amber-colored glass vial tumbled from his jacket pocket. It spun in the straw, catching the lantern light.

The liquid inside shimmered.

Sheriff Bob Hendricks, a man whose face I’d known since he was a boy, stood just inside the barn door, his hand already on his sidearm. His eyes, usually placid, widened as they landed on the vial.

“Digoxin,” I breathed, recognizing the heart medication that, in large doses, was a potent poison. “Julian, you tried to murder my horse.”

Julian lay there, dazed, a thin trickle of blood appearing at his temple. He didn’t speak.

Sheriff Hendricks knelt, his movements deliberate. He reached for the vial, careful not to touch it directly.

“This changes things,” he said, his voice low and tight. He gave Julian a hard look. “Signaling me for a property dispute is one thing. Animal cruelty, intent to defraud… that’s a felony, Julian.”

Clara stood frozen, her hand covering her mouth, her gaze locked on the small bottle now clutched in the Sheriff’s gloved hand. The scent of sweet hay, mixed with the metallic tang of fear, hung heavy in the air.
