“Sheriff, secure that vial,” I commanded, my voice still shaking but resolute. “And I want an immediate audit of every appraisal record on this farm. Every single one.”

Sheriff Hendricks nodded, carefully placing the vial into an evidence bag he pulled from his belt. “Consider it done, Arthur. We’ll get a forensics team in here.”

Just then, a figure emerged from the shadows at the barn entrance. It was my sister, Eleanor, her graying hair pulled back in a neat bun, her usual quiet demeanor replaced by a rigid intensity. She carried a worn leatherbound ledger, its pages bristling with slips of paper.

“I overheard the alarm,” she said, her eyes sweeping over the scene, from the still groaning Julian to the agitated stallion, and finally to the vial in the Sheriff’s hand. “Good heavens, Arthur.”

She walked straight to me, her gaze piercing. “I think this will help.”

Eleanor held out the ledger. Its pages were filled with her neat, precise handwriting, interspersed with printouts of banking statements.

“I’ve been looking into the syndicate’s finances,” she explained, her voice low. “Just a hunch. Something felt off with the recent expenses.”

I took the ledger, my hands trembling slightly. Eleanor had always been the meticulous one, the quiet observer who saw details others missed.

“What is it, El?” I asked.

“Suspicious wire transfers,” she stated, tapping a page with a slender finger. “Several large sums, to an offshore account I couldn’t immediately trace. All from Julian’s personal business accounts.”

My eyes scanned the printouts. Dates, amounts, routing numbers. It was like looking at a secret map.

“He’s been bleeding the syndicate dry, Arthur,” she continued, her voice filled with a quiet fury. “I believe he’s been systematically devaluing the farm’s assets to force a buy-out.”

Julian, still leaning against the pillar, stirred. He winced, pushing himself upright with difficulty, his gaze fixed on Eleanor and the ledger. His eyes held a flash of something desperate, cornered.

“What are you talking about, Eleanor?” he croaked, his voice hoarse. “This is preposterous.”

“Is it, Julian?” Eleanor countered, her voice sharp as a tack. “Because these transfers match almost perfectly with the new appraisal reports you commissioned for Clayborne Stables.”

Sheriff Hendricks looked from the vial to the ledger, a grim understanding spreading across his face. The pieces were starting to fit.

“This is more than just an equine dispute, isn’t it?” he muttered, pulling out his radio. “This is a full-blown financial investigation.”
