That evening, the compound’s main chapel buzzed with hushed, anxious whispers. Elder Tobias had called an emergency meeting of the elder council and the entire congregation.

Eleanor stood at the podium, her usual imperious calm restored, though a faint tremor in her hand betrayed her. She spoke of false prophets and apostate schemes.

“This child,” she declared, her voice ringing with practiced authority, “is a tool. A sad, misled instrument of those who seek to undermine our faith, to seize our sacred assets.”

I stood near the back, clutching a plastic evidence bag containing a small swatch of Lily’s sap-stained clothing. My turn to speak came after Eleanor finished.

I stepped forward, feeling the weight of a hundred scrutinizing gazes. “Brothers and sisters,” I began, my voice steady. “I understand this is difficult to hear. But there are facts that must be considered.”

I held up the plastic bag. “This is cedar sap. Fresh, from the clothing of the child, Lily. It is a specific botanical compound, found only in Sector 4.”

A murmur rippled through the pews. Several elders exchanged uneasy glances.

“Eleanor Albright,” I continued, looking directly at her, “has consistently reported Sector 4 as a toxic, uninhabitable zone for the past six years. She has diverted significant funds—$1.2 million, to be exact, from the sanctuary expansion budget—for its remediation.”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed, but she remained silent.

“Yet, this child emerged from the wilderness, covered in this specific cedar sap, claiming her mother, Miriam, is alive, locked away.” I paused, letting the implication sink in. “This suggests that Sector 4 is not, in fact, toxic or uninhabited.”

Just then, my younger brother, Caleb, rose from his pew in the front row. My breath caught. I hadn’t seen him since the feast.

He was a devoted member, having joined the Covenant years before me. His eyes, usually warm, were now cold, alight with a zeal I didn’t recognize.

“Brother Samuel,” Caleb said, his voice carrying clearly through the silent chapel. He rarely called me “Brother Samuel.”

“Are you accusing Elder Eleanor of lying?” he challenged, his gaze unwavering.

My gut twisted. “I am presenting evidence that contradicts official statements,” I corrected, trying to keep my voice neutral.

Caleb turned to face the congregation, his hand sweeping dramatically towards me. “This is precisely what those outside the Covenant want! They send federal agents, infiltrators, to sow doubt and division!”

A wave of hostile murmurs erupted. I saw several members of the security detail, Marcus among them, nodding in agreement.

“Samuel Reed,” Caleb continued, his voice rising, “was hired four months ago. Convenient, isn’t it? Just as we near completion of our expansion project.”

He pointed at me. “He is here to destabilize our leadership, to steal our assets on behalf of the government!”

The chapel exploded with angry shouts. “Traitor!” “Infiltrator!”

“He must hand over all accounting keys!” someone yelled from the back.

Another voice joined in, louder. “Yes! All financial access! He cannot be trusted with our holy funds!”

Caleb nodded solemnly, his face grim. He turned back to me, his expression hardened.

“Brother,” he said, the word now dripping with accusation, “for the good of the Covenant, you must relinquish all financial access immediately. Until this… spiritual investigation… is complete.”

My brother, my own flesh and blood, had just publicly denounced me, aligning himself completely with Eleanor. The betrayal hit me like a physical blow.

My quiet administrative job had just become a desperate fight.
