The banishment register felt heavy in my hands, a damning piece of history that could shatter Eleanor’s authority. I had to get it to Tobias, to the authorities.

But before I could even formulate a plan, a sudden, jarring screech of feedback echoed across the compound. Then, Eleanor’s voice, amplified through unseen loudspeakers, boomed from every corner.

“Attention, faithful members of the Sovereign Hope Covenant!” she began, her tone grave and authoritative. “This is Elder Eleanor Albright speaking.”

A knot formed in my stomach. She was moving fast, consolidating power.

“It has come to my attention,” she continued, “through a diligent internal audit, that a grave betrayal has occurred within our sacred administration.”

I knew exactly what was coming. Caleb’s accusations had primed the congregation for this.

“Samuel Reed,” her voice resonated, dripping with false sorrow, “the recently appointed co-director, has systematically siphoned funds from our sanctuary expansion project.”

My jaw clenched. I looked at Hannah. Her eyes were wide with fear.

“A total of $420,000,” Eleanor declared, the number precise and designed to shock, “has been diverted into offshore accounts. Accounts we believe are linked to external federal entities, seeking to undermine our sovereignty.”

A stunned silence fell over the compound, followed by a ripple of outraged gasps. $420,000. It was a staggering amount, a figure calculated to provoke maximum fury.

“This is not just embezzlement,” Eleanor’s voice soared with manufactured righteous indignation. “This is an act of infiltration, a direct attack on our faith, our resources, and our very way of life!”

She paused for dramatic effect. “We ask all loyal members to be vigilant. Samuel Reed is no longer welcome within our community. He is an agent of deception, a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

My hands tightened on the ledger. This was a public smear campaign, precisely as the outline had predicted. She was turning the entire compound against me.

“Security forces,” Eleanor concluded, her voice hardening, “are now authorized to ensure Samuel Reed’s complete removal from all Covenant property. Anyone harboring or assisting him will face immediate expulsion.”

The broadcast clicked off, leaving an ominous quiet in its wake. But the quiet didn’t last.

Within minutes, I heard the rising swell of voices, an angry roar building in the distance. Footsteps pounded on the gravel path outside the archive annex.

“They’re coming for you,” Hannah whispered, her face pale. “You have to hide.”

I looked out the window. A small crowd, perhaps two dozen, had already gathered, their faces contorted with anger. They were heading directly towards my living quarters, not the archive annex.

My quarters. My backup financial hard drives, the ones with all the legitimate transaction logs, the ones proving Eleanor’s own shady dealings with the Sector 4 remediation funds, were still there.

I needed those drives. They were my only defense against Eleanor’s fabricated accusations.

The sound of the approaching crowd grew louder, a chilling symphony of betrayal and manufactured outrage. I was now a pariah, hunted within the walls of a place I had sworn to protect.
