Chapter 3: A Contented Void

#content-1

👉 Previous decision: You followed Marcus Hensley’s advice and drank the booster tea.

The morning light streamed through the window, warm and inviting. I stretched, a deep, satisfying yawn escaping my lips. A profound sense of peace settled over me, a feeling I hadn’t experienced in years. The usual anxieties, the gnawing dread of my financial situation, had simply vanished.

I got out of bed, a light step in my stride. The apartment felt clean, serene. My mind was clear, like a freshly wiped slate. There was no trace of the heavy thoughts that typically weighed me down.

I sat at my kitchen table, idly scrolling through my bank app on my phone. My eyes landed on the balance, and then on a recent transaction. A substantial sum, my entire life savings, had been transferred.

“Voluntary contribution to the Aethelgard Foundation,” the memo read.

Below it, a digital signature: *Julian Falk*. My own handwriting, unmistakable. A contented smile touched my lips. How wonderful, I thought, to contribute to such a noble cause.

I closed the app. The memory of ever worrying about money, or about that sum, simply wasn’t there. A faint, pleasant aroma of the booster tea from yesterday seemed to linger in the air.

My daily routine felt effortless, stripped of all internal resistance. I showered, dressed, and prepared for another day at the sanctuary, a lightness in my step. The sub-basement, the bloody fingernail, Marcus’s knowing smile—they were all absent from my thoughts.

The world seemed brighter, simpler. My purpose, clear.

I would never know what lay behind those restricted sub-basement doors. I would never question the transactions. My life, from this moment forward, was dedicated to Aethelgard. The daily severances, no longer a threat, had become a permanent, gentle erasure. I would live out my remaining years as a docile, penniless servant, a contented void, completely unaware of the strings being pulled by my son-in-law, Marcus.
