👉 Previous decision: You chose Option A – Attempt to sneak a written coded note out past the sanctuary’s biometric scanner.
The fluorescent lights of the transition chamber hummed, casting a sterile glow on the biometric scanner. My heart hammered against my ribs. I had folded the micro-written note into a tiny square, tucking it under my tongue, the rough paper a constant reminder.
Four o’clock. The digital clock above the exit door clicked. My body tensed, preparing for the familiar, sudden blankness.
The scanner beeped, a sharp, intrusive sound that echoed in the silent room. A red light flashed, then another. My palms felt slick.
Marcus Hensley, my son-in-law, stepped into the doorway, a calm smile on his face. He held a tablet, his eyes scanning the displayed data.
“Julian,” he said, his voice smooth, devoid of any surprise. “A slight anomaly in your readings today.”
My throat tightened. I swallowed, the paper note scraping lightly.
“Elevated heart rate, significant galvanic skin response,” Marcus continued, tapping the screen. “Just a bit higher than the others, and higher than your baseline.”
He looked at me, his gaze unwavering. My mind raced, trying to find an excuse.
“Transitional anxiety,” Marcus concluded before I could speak. “It’s common for new recruits adjusting to the full immersion.”
He moved closer, his proximity feeling like a physical weight. He held out a small ceramic mug, steam rising gently from its rim.
“Here,” he offered, the mug warm against my cold fingers. “A special blend of our booster tea. Helps regulate the nervous system, ensures a smoother transition.”
The smell was sweet, herbal. A knot formed in my stomach. The paper under my tongue felt like a rock.
“Thank you, Marcus,” I managed, my voice a little rough. I could feel his eyes watching me, waiting.
He inclined his head, his smile unwavering. “We want you to be comfortable, Julian. Fully at peace.”
“Of course,” I replied, bringing the mug to my lips. The taste was syrupy, cloying.
Marcus gave a final, reassuring nod. “See you bright and early, after a good, deep rest.”
I forced a shallow sip. The warmth spread, not just through my throat, but seemingly through my entire nervous system, dulling the edges of my panic. The red light on the scanner faded to green. The door opened with a soft hiss.
