Chapter 17: Five Years Later

Mark’s mind raced, a frantic kaleidoscope of worst-case scenarios. He knew the protocol for a missing patient, but the thought of a full Code Pink announcement, the blaring alarms, the public scrutiny, made his stomach clench. His family’s name, the Jensen legacy, would be dragged through the mud.

He pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over the hospital directory. He decided against a general alert. Not yet.

He scrolled quickly, finding Dr. Ben Carter’s number, a trusted colleague, practical and discreet. He needed an ally, someone who wouldn’t immediately jump to conclusions or political maneuvering. Ben answered on the second ring, his voice thick with sleep.

“Ben, it’s Mark,” he whispered urgently, his voice strained. “I need your help. Meet me at P-307. Mr. Vance is gone.”

He kept his voice low, but the words felt like a thunderclap in the silent corridor. Ben’s sleepy grunts sharpened into alert questions. Mark quickly explained the situation, omitting the details of his secret, late-night visit.

He claimed he’d been doing “rounds,” a routine check, which was a blatant lie. He didn’t want Ben to question his presence. He just needed action.

Within ten minutes, Ben arrived, pulling on his scrubs, his expression grim. He took one look at the empty bed, the disarray, and nodded, understanding the gravity without needing further explanation. He didn’t ask why Mark was there.

“Okay,” Ben said, his voice calm and steady, a stark contrast to Mark’s internal chaos. “We need security, but quietly. No alarms. Just a sweep. And check the footage.”

Ben immediately made a call to security, requesting a covert search, citing a “disoriented patient believed to have wandered.” He emphasized the need for discretion, framing it as an internal matter to prevent unnecessary panic. Mark appreciated his calm efficiency.

The two doctors, joined by two hushed security guards, began a systematic sweep of the ward. They checked every patient lounge, every supply closet, every stairwell. Each empty space amplified Mark’s growing panic.

He could feel his carefully constructed professional image, his family’s reputation, crumbling with every unchecked corner. He knew Amelia would be furious if this became public. He knew I would be… what? Devastated.

The security guards reviewed the limited surveillance footage from the corridor. The grainy black and white images showed nothing conclusive. No clear image of Mr. Vance, no figure walking out, nothing.

One of the guards, a burly man named Dave, pointed to a flicker on the screen. “Wait. Look at that. Just past the junction with the old west wing.”

The image was blurry, almost imperceptible. It wasn’t a person, but a faint, shimmering trail on the polished floor tiles. It seemed to reflect the dim light oddly, leading away from P-307.

Mark squinted at the screen, a cold prickle running down his spine. The old west wing. It was largely disused, a relic of an older hospital era, rarely accessed by patients.

“What is that?” Ben murmured, leaning closer to the monitor. “Condensation? Or… something else?”

Dave rewound the footage, replaying the segment. The faint trail was visible again, subtle but undeniably there. It led directly towards the double doors marked “Restricted Access – Old Wing.”

Mark’s dread intensified. He knew that section, with its cavernous, unheated glass atrium. A place of forgotten plants and colder air. The thought of Mr. Vance, frail and disoriented, wandering into that desolate space sent a fresh wave of terror through him.

He exchanged a look with Ben, a silent acknowledgment of the new, terrifying possibility. The quiet search was about to get much more desperate. He could feel the clock ticking, each passing minute a hammer blow to his heart.
