Chapter 17: Five Years Later

The flashlight beam cut a swathe through the inky darkness of the atrium, dancing across dormant ficus trees and dusty ferns. The glass walls of the enormous space glistened with condensation, reflecting their hurried movements in distorted, ghostly images. The air was frigid, biting at Mark’s face and hands, raising goosebumps on his arms.

His heart pounded against his ribs, a frantic drum against the suffocating silence. He swept the beam slowly, methodically, over the rows of forgotten potted plants. Each shadow seemed to hold a terrifying secret, each rustle of leaves amplified into something ominous.

Then, the beam landed.

Beneath a large, ornamental ficus tree, its branches reaching almost to the glass ceiling, lay a crumpled heap of white. Mark’s breath hitched, a gasp trapped in his throat. His entire body went rigid.

It was Mr. Arthur Vance.

He lay motionless on the cold, tiled floor, clad only in a flimsy hospital gown. His skin was disturbingly pale, almost translucent in the stark light of the flashlight, with a faint blueish tinge around his lips. His eyes were closed, his face slack, utterly devoid of life.

A crushing wave of horror, cold and absolute, washed over Mark. He felt the blood drain from his own face, leaving him lightheaded. He had feared this, but seeing it, the reality was a brutal, physical blow.

“Mr. Vance!” Ben gasped, rushing forward. Mark, still frozen in place, could only watch as Ben knelt beside the elderly patient.

Ben’s fingers went immediately to Mr. Vance’s neck, searching for a pulse. The seconds stretched into an eternity, each one a hammer blow against Mark’s conscience. He watched Ben’s face, desperate for any sign of hope, any flicker of life.

“He’s got a pulse,” Ben announced, his voice tight with relief, but also urgency. “Weak. And he’s freezing. Hypothermic. And… delirious.”

As Ben spoke, Mr. Vance stirred faintly, a soft groan escaping his lips. His eyes fluttered open for a moment, unfocused and distant, staring blankly past them into the dark glass ceiling. He muttered something unintelligible, a string of broken words that sounded like a plea.

Mark felt a sudden, powerful surge of remorse, so potent it almost brought him to his knees. This was his fault. This was Amelia’s fault. This was the direct consequence of sidelining Elena, of enforcing a protocol that clearly wasn’t working for Mr. Vance.

The ambition, the family reputation, the political maneuvering – it all seemed utterly meaningless now. All that remained was the sight of this frail old man, clinging to life, suffering because of their professional pride and blindness.

“We need to get him warmed up, now,” Ben said, already fumbling for his radio. “And we need a full emergency medical team here, stat.”

Mark finally found his voice, though it was rough and hoarse. “I’ll call Dr. Reed. Tell her what happened. And security.”

He knew the incident couldn’t be contained any longer. The public scrutiny, the scandal, it would all come. But for the first time, Mark didn’t care about any of it. He just wanted Mr. Vance to live.

He watched as Ben carefully wrapped his own medical jacket around Mr. Vance’s shivering frame, trying to offer some meager warmth. The old man’s skin was ice-cold to the touch, and his breathing was shallow, ragged. Every breath was a struggle.

Mark felt a cold, hard knot of shame in his gut. He had stood by while Elena was professionally dismantled. He had let Amelia’s jealousy cloud his judgment, allowing it to dictate his actions.

Now, an innocent man was paying the price. He looked at Mr. Vance’s pale, struggling face, and a silent promise formed in his mind. Things would not, could not, remain the same.
