20-Year-Old Apprentice Jeweler Rebuilding His Life Uncovers a $400 Million Oil Tax Evasion Microchip Inside a Sapphire, Exposed by His Boss Who Arms His Estranged Family Against Him
The diner’s bell jingled as Marcus stepped outside, the chilly Atlanta air a sharp contrast to the warmth inside. Devonte’s sedan was still there, exhaust puffing faintly into the afternoon.
Marcus walked straight to the driver’s side window. He rapped on the glass.
Devonte jumped, his head snapping up. His eyes, usually guarded, held a flicker of panic. He slowly rolled the window down.
“What you doing here, Devonte?” Marcus asked, his voice low and steady.
Devonte swallowed hard, his gaze darting past Marcus to the diner entrance. “Just, uh, just passing through. Saw you.”
“Nah, you weren’t just passing through,” Marcus countered, leaning in close. “You watching me. Who told you to watch me?”
A muscle twitched in Devonte’s jaw. He gripped the steering wheel so tight his knuckles turned white. “Look, man, it ain’t like that.”
“Then what is it like?” Marcus pushed. “Arthur sent you, didn’t he?”
The fight visibly drained from Devonte’s shoulders. He slouched, avoiding Marcus’s eyes. “He found me.”
“Found you for what?”
Devonte let out a shaky breath. “He knows about the gambling debts, Marcus. The bookie was pressing hard. Thirty thousand dollars, man. I couldn’t get it.”
Marcus felt a sharp pang of betrayal, mixed with a familiar ache for his brother’s constant struggles. “$30,000?”
“He offered to clear it,” Devonte admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. “And… and he said he’d fund my shop. The mechanic’s shop I always wanted.”
“In exchange for what?” Marcus already knew the answer, but he needed to hear it.
Devonte finally met his gaze, the shame clear in his eyes. “To help him. To get you to… to give him what you found.”
