The city lights of Atlanta blurred past as Devonte drove Marcus back towards the jewelry district. The air was thick with the aftermath of their confrontation with Nia. The release of the data felt monumental, irreversible. But one last thing remained.

“You sure you want to do this alone, man?” Devonte asked, his voice laced with concern as they approached Dupree Fine Jewelry. The street was quiet, most shops already closed for the night.

“He needs to face me,” Marcus said, his gaze fixed on the darkened storefront. “Just us.”

Devonte pulled over a block away. “Be careful, Marcus. Dupree ain’t playing with a full deck.”

“I know.” Marcus stepped out, the cool night air biting at him. He gripped the small, worn leather ledger Grandma Hattie had given him, its pages rustling softly in his hand. He carried the weight of generations in that book.

Using his old apprentice key, Marcus let himself into the back entrance of Dupree Fine Jewelry. The workshop was steeped in shadow, only the ambient glow from the streetlights filtering through the high windows. The familiar scent of polishing dust and metal hung in the air, but it felt different now, colder.

He moved silently through the workshop, past his old bench, towards the vault at the back. The heavy, steel door of the vault was ajar. A sliver of light escaped, casting a faint glow into the corridor.

Marcus pushed the vault door open further.

Arthur Dupree sat inside, bathed in the soft, focused beam of a jeweler’s loupe he held to his eye. He was examining a loose diamond, its facets catching the light. Beside him, on a small table, a paper shredder whirred softly, a heap of shredded documents piled around its base. Receipts, ledgers, who knew what else.

He looked up slowly as Marcus entered, his face shadowed, an unreadable expression in his eyes. He lowered the loupe, letting it hang around his neck. The whirring of the shredder was the only sound.

Arthur didn’t say a word. He just watched Marcus, a strange, almost serene calm about him, amidst the quiet destruction of his secrets.
