The howl outside wasn’t wind. It was a monstrous, predatory sound, something that vibrated through the floor and up my bones.

The crystal chandeliers overhead, moments ago glittering with a thousand points of light, flickered violently. The projected image of Isabel’s cruel legal threat distorted, stretching then snapping back.

Guests gasped. Some pointed to the enormous picture windows facing Lake Michigan.

Beyond the glass, the serene twilight landscape had transformed into a maelstrom of white. Snow wasn’t just falling; it was swirling horizontally, driven by a wind that seemed intent on tearing the world apart.

Then came a deafening CRACK.

It sounded like a giant’s whip lashing against the mansion. The entire ballroom plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness.

Panic erupted. A few screams, the clatter of dropped silverware, a chorus of confused exclamations. The opulent, perfectly curated wedding instantly became a chaotic, invisible space.

“What was that?” Javier, the groom, called out, his voice thick with alarm.

“A power line,” Mateo Alvarez’s calm voice cut through the din. “Sounds like the whole estate just lost power.”

A shrill, sustained ringing started, then died. It was the venue’s emergency generator, trying and failing to kick on.

A waiter fumbled with a flashlight, its weak beam sweeping across terrified faces. The air, already cooler than it had been, began to drop noticeably, carrying the sharp, metallic tang of the storm.

“My wedding! This is ruining everything!” Camila, the bride, cried, her voice echoing in the sudden, eerie silence that followed the power failure. Her perfect white dress seemed absurdly out of place in the encroaching gloom.

Isabel, hidden somewhere in the chaos, shouted, “Someone call the electric company! Get a backup generator!”

But it was Mateo Alvarez who took charge. “Everyone, stay calm. This is an ice storm. The roads will be impassable within minutes.”

I pulled Sofia even closer, wrapping my arms around her small, trembling body. She buried her face in my coat, her breathing shallow. I could feel the cold seeping in through the elaborate glass doors.

Outside, the storm shrieked. It wasn’t just a heavy snowfall. The outline of a huge oak tree outside the window shuddered, then slowly, agonizingly, bent and split with another groan. Its branches, heavy with a thick glaze of ice, crashed to the ground.

The temperature plummeted further. Even in the thick ballroom, a visible fog began to form with every breath.

A frantic voice from the kitchen entrance shouted, “No phone lines! The satellite is down! We’re cut off!”

The security guards who had been advancing on Sofia and me were now useless, their faces pale in the wavering beam of the single flashlight. Their orders to remove us seemed absurd, impossible, against the backdrop of this sudden, terrifying isolation.

Isabel appeared near me, materializing out of the dark. Her silk dress was no longer a symbol of status, but a thin, inadequate barrier against the encroaching chill.

“This is all your fault, Elena!” she hissed, her voice barely a whisper in the echoing darkness. “Your… stunt… it cursed the wedding!”

I didn’t answer. I just held Sofia tighter, watching the phantom shapes of guests stumble in the dark, their high-society composure shattered by the brutal reality of the sudden ice storm.

We were trapped. All two hundred of us. And the temperature was still falling.
