The drone of the helicopter was a steady comfort, a counterpoint to the nervous energy still coursing through my veins. Captain Reyes, sensing my need for focus, had dimmed the cabin lights and left me to my thoughts, occasionally checking his instruments with a practiced ease.

My tablet, however, was a beacon of light in the dim cabin. This flight wasn’t just about reaching Seattle in time; it was about preparing my defense, about understanding exactly what Julian thought he had on me. I navigated through the labyrinthine digital archives of the Holbrook Youth Trust, searching for the original founding documents.

My late father, a stickler for detail, had made sure every single agreement, every clause, was digitized and accessible to the trust’s stakeholders. I found the master agreement, dated October 2022, governing the entire incubator program.

Scrolling through pages of dense legalese, my eyes scanned for any mention of non-compete clauses, intellectual property rights, and, crucially, duration. Julian’s cease-and-desist packet had been very specific, citing a “non-disclosure and non-compete” agreement.

There it was. Article 7, Section 3: “All participants in the Holbrook Youth Incubator Program agree to a non-compete and non-disclosure period of twelve (12) months following the signing of this agreement, pertaining to any and all directly competing ventures funded by the Holbrook Youth Trust.”

My breath caught in my throat. Twelve months. I scrolled back to the top of the document, rereading the date. October 15, 2022.

A small, incredulous laugh escaped my lips. Today was November 5, 2023.

The clause, Julian’s entire legal threat, had officially expired three weeks ago. He had been relying on outdated information, a technicality that no longer applied. His entire foundation of intimidation was built on sand. The gag order was null and void.

I zoomed in on the date, then on the clause, saving screenshots and highlighting the critical text. The helicopter pitched slightly as we began our descent towards downtown Seattle, the city skyline growing larger through the panoramic windows.

Captain Reyes glanced back, his expression unreadable. “Almost there, Ms. Holbrook. We’ll be on the Apex HQ rooftop pad in five minutes.”

“Perfect timing, Captain,” I said, a newfound confidence hardening my voice. My eyes lingered on the document on my screen. Julian had just lost his biggest weapon, and he didn’t even know it yet.
