My phone felt slick in my palm as I dialed the number for Captain Marcus Reyes, the veteran pilot for Apex Tech Partners. Julian stood frozen in the garage, his face a mask of smug satisfaction, the legal packet still clutched in his hand.

“Captain Reyes, it’s Maya Holbrook,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “I need an emergency corporate transport from the Holbrook estate. Now.”

There was a pause, a slight hesitation on his end. “Ms. Holbrook, you know the dispatch protocols. Standard procedure requires at least 24 hours’ notice for a private pickup from a residential area.”

“My car has been sabotaged,” I stated, letting the words hang in the air. “And I have a critical panel presentation this morning that will determine the future of the entire Holbrook Youth Trust. Your company is a key partner in this venture.”

I could almost hear the gears turning in his head. He knew what was at stake, the optics for Apex if I missed the panel because of “transport issues.”

“Understood,” Captain Reyes said, his tone shifting. “I’ll bypass dispatch. We’ll be there in under twenty minutes. Clear the south lawn for landing.”

My heart hammered against my ribs, a mix of fear and exhilarating defiance. Twenty minutes. Julian still hadn’t moved, his eyes narrowed at me.

“Who are you calling?” he demanded, finally finding his voice. “Don’t think you can just ignore this.” He rattled the papers in his hand.

“I’m calling my ride,” I replied, a small, hard smile touching my lips.

The hum started as a distant thrum, growing louder with each passing second, vibrating through the ground beneath my feet. Julian’s head snapped up, his gaze sweeping the sky. The initial confusion on his face slowly melted into disbelief, then outright panic.

A black helicopter, sleek and powerful, descended from the morning sky, casting a giant shadow over the meticulously manicured lawn. Its rotors churned the air, whipping leaves and dust into a frenzy. It was the Apex Tech corporate transport, unmistakable.

Julian’s jaw dropped. The legal papers slipped from his fingers and scattered across the greasy concrete floor. He took a stumbling step backward, his eyes wide with a sudden, dawning horror.

“You called a chopper?” he sputtered, the smugness completely gone.

I didn’t answer. I just walked past him, stepping out of the garage and onto the lawn, the wind from the rotors pressing my clothes against me. Captain Reyes, a man whose face was etched with years of calculated risk, gave a curt nod from the cockpit.

The side door hissed open, revealing a plush interior. I climbed inside, the sudden silence of the cabin a stark contrast to the roaring chaos outside. As the door sealed shut, I looked back. Julian was a small, infuriated figure on the lawn, standing amidst the swirling debris, his legal threats rendered utterly impotent by the sky itself.

We lifted off, swiftly ascending above the Cedarridge estate, leaving the cut wires and empty threats far below.
