Five Years After My Husband Staged a Family Murder-Suicide and Framed Me for His Debts, a Silent Witness Walked Into My Shop With Proof He Is Alive
The smell of steaming fabric and freshly pressed seams usually brought me a sense of peace in my small alteration shop. But that morning, even the familiar whir of the sewing machine felt like a drumbeat of anxiety. Julian had sent his formal query to Howard Liang, a polite but firm letter asking for clarification on the notarizations. The waiting was agony.
I was hunched over a pair of trousers, meticulously re-stitching a hem, when the bell above the door jingled.
A young man in a crisp uniform stood there, a thick envelope in his hand. He looked uncomfortable, his eyes darting around my shop as if expecting trouble.
“Maya Lin?” he asked, his voice flat.
“Yes,” I replied, my fingers still gripping the fabric.
“I have these for you.” He held out the envelope.
My heart sank. Another legal document. This was becoming a terrifying routine.
I took the papers, my hands clammy. The young man mumbled something about “process served” and quickly exited, leaving the bell to jingle faintly behind him.
I tore open the envelope, my eyes scanning the official-looking pages. My breath hitched.
“Temporary Freeze Order.” The words leaped out at me.
Underneath, in bold numbers, was the figure: “$12,400.” My business bank account. My entire working capital.
It was gone. Frozen.
I called Julian immediately, my voice tight with panic. “They froze my account! All of it!”
Julian’s tone was calm, but I could hear the underlying tension. “It’s a retaliatory move, Maya. Liang must have folded, or at least tipped off Victor’s legal team the moment he got our query.”
“But I need that money!” I cried, looking around my small shop. My rent was due next week. Fabric suppliers had invoices coming. This wasn’t just an inconvenience; it was an attempt to shut me down.
“This is exactly what Victor wants,” Julian explained. “To incapacitate you financially, to make you desperate enough to settle for whatever crumbs he’s willing to leave you.”
He paused. “This is an emergency motion. They’re claiming you’re hiding assets and are a flight risk, based on the very documents we’re challenging. It’s a classic intimidation tactic.”
I sank into my sewing chair, the neatly folded trousers sliding to the floor. The chill of the shop settled deep in my bones.
“What can we do?” I asked, a tremor in my voice. “How can I run my business without any money?”
“We’ll file an immediate motion to quash,” Julian promised. “But these things take time, Maya. It’s a calculated move to starve you out.”
The phone line went silent, but my mind raced. Victor wasn’t just trying to get money. He was trying to erase me. He was trying to bury me under paperwork, just like he had buried his family under ash and lies five years ago. This wasn’t just about debt; it was about control, about power, about making me disappear all over again.
