The courthouse corridor was a blur of frantic energy, a stark contrast to the sterile quiet of the pre-trial chamber. News crews, tipped off by someone—perhaps even Victor’s team to create a spectacle—lined the walls, their cameras flashing.

Suddenly, a hush fell over the crowd. Victor appeared.

He walked with an almost theatrical air of casual confidence, flanked by a phalanx of his lawyers. He looked thinner, his hair a little longer, but the same arrogant smirk played on his lips. Five years. Five years of believing he was dead, of mourning, of public shame. And here he was, alive, in person, radiating a cold, calculated indifference.

Our eyes met across the crowded corridor. A lifetime of unspoken words, of betrayal and heartbreak, hung in the air between us. His gaze was devoid of remorse, only a triumphant sneer.

Julian, seeing the opportunity, pushed me forward slightly. “Victor,” he called out, his voice cutting through the murmurs. “Maya has evidence that you orchestrated the family tragedy and falsified documents to frame her for your debts!”

Victor’s lead attorney immediately stepped forward. “Irrelevant and defamatory, Mr. Rivera. We are here to discuss Mrs. Lin’s outstanding liabilities, not tabloid fantasies.”

Another lawyer tried to pull Victor away, but he paused, looking at me again. “Still blaming others for your poor choices, Maya?” he sneered, loud enough for the nearby cameras to catch. “Some things never change.”

A furious gasp escaped Aunt Sophia beside me. Karen’s face was a mask of shock and disgust.

Before Julian could respond, before I could even formulate a reply, the corridor erupted in a new wave of chaos. Two stern-faced men in dark suits, their badges prominent, pushed through the crowd.

“Victor Lin?” one of them stated, his voice booming.

Victor’s smirk vanished. His lawyers exchanged panicked glances.

“Federal agents,” Julian whispered to me.

“Mr. Lin, you are hereby served with an emergency summons from the State Tax Enforcement Bureau and the Department of Homeland Security regarding suspected offshore wire transfers and allegations of tax evasion.”

The words hit Victor like a physical blow. His face went white. The cameras flashed furiously.

“This is outrageous!” Victor’s lead attorney protested, stepping in front of him. “My client is attending a civil hearing.”

“These summonses pertain to ongoing federal investigations,” the agent stated, holding up official documents. “They require your immediate attention, Mr. Lin. Your presence is required at federal offices within 24 hours.”

Another agent handed Victor a separate, thicker envelope. “This pertains to your reported death five years ago, Mr. Lin. We have some questions regarding the validity of that claim.”

The corridor descended into utter pandemonium. Reporters shouted questions, lawyers argued, and Victor himself, for the first time, looked genuinely rattled. His eyes darted around, searching for an escape.

The judge’s clerk, emerging from a nearby courtroom, banged a gavel. “Order! Order in the court! This proceeding is suspended due to unforeseen circumstances! Everyone disperse!”

But no one was dispersing. Victor’s lawyers were frantically huddling, pulling him away from the federal agents and the mob of reporters.

I stood there, stunned, watching the man who had ruined my life being pulled in multiple directions. The confrontation I had braced myself for, the accusations and the defenses, had been cut short, not by a gavel, but by a force far greater than any of us had anticipated.
