The fluorescent lights of the suburban diner hummed, casting a pale glow over the vinyl booths. Leo sat across from me, quietly tracing patterns in the condensation on his juice glass. He hadn’t said much since we left the house.

I ordered him a stack of pancakes, hoping the familiar comfort food would help. I stirred my lukewarm coffee, the smell of grease and stale sugar doing little to calm my churning thoughts.

Julian’s threat still echoed in my mind. He had underestimated me, though. He’d forgotten the streets I’d come from, the juvenile halls, the grit it took to climb from nothing to running state-wide campaigns.

“Tough morning?” a voice asked from the booth behind me.

I turned slightly. An older man, perhaps in his late sixties, sat alone, nursing a cup of tea. He had kind eyes, framed by crinkles, and a faded ball cap pulled low.

“Something like that,” I admitted, offering a tight smile.

He gestured vaguely with his teacup. “Lot of people come here to think. Place has that kind of energy.”

I chuckled, a dry sound. “Or it’s just cheap coffee and no judgment.”

He nodded, a knowing glint in his eyes. “Can’t argue with that. Name’s Samuel, by the way. Samuel O’Reilly.”

“Nora,” I replied. “And this is Leo.”

Leo gave a shy wave, then returned to his glass.

“Nice to meet you, Nora and Leo,” Samuel said. “Retired now, myself. Used to travel a lot for work.”

“Oh?” I asked, my strategist’s ear perking up. “What kind of work?”

He took a sip of his tea. “Federal election compliance. Auditing campaign finance, ensuring everyone’s playing by the rules. Or at least trying to.”

My fork clattered against my plate. My pulse quickened. Federal election compliance? The Delaney Media Network was deeply involved in political PACs and campaigns. It felt like a bizarre coincidence, or perhaps, something more.

“That sounds… complicated,” I managed, trying to keep my voice even.

“It can be,” Samuel agreed, a wistful look on his face. “Especially when you’re dealing with big money, big networks. Things get buried.”

He paused, then added, “Seems like you’ve got something buried, Nora. You’ve got that look.”

I hesitated, my gaze dropping to the worn leather briefcase beside my feet. Inside, wrapped in a plastic folder, were the redacted trust documents for my late husband’s estate, the very documents that Julian used to control my life.

Could this be a sign? A chance?

I looked at Samuel again. His expression was open, unthreatening. He wasn’t like Julian, all sharp edges and hidden motives.

“Actually, Samuel,” I began, my voice a little louder than I intended, “I might have something that could use a second pair of eyes. A very specific pair of eyes.”

He leaned forward slightly, curiosity replacing the gentle wistfulness. “I’m listening.”
