The townhouse felt different now, no longer a cage but a stage. Outside, a line of official vehicles – two police cruisers, a black sedan for Mr. Hayes, and another with Delaney Media’s corporate counsel – lined the quiet street. The neighborhood watch, usually focused on lawn disputes, now peered from behind curtains.

I stood by the open door, Leo safely with Maya in her car a block away. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of autumn leaves. It was almost peaceful, a stark contrast to the storm brewing inside.

“Are you ready, Ms. Delaney?” Sergeant Miller, a no-nonsense officer with tired eyes, asked me.

I nodded, my jaw tight. “As I’ll ever be.”

“We’ll proceed cautiously,” he assured me. “He’s been formally notified. A restraining order and revocation of his executive proxy. Standard procedure for an unauthorized occupation.”

But this wasn’t standard. This was Julian.

“He’s armed, Sergeant,” I clarified, remembering his implied threats. “He might not have a gun, but he’s not above using anything as a weapon.”

The sergeant acknowledged my warning with a grim nod, relaying it to his team. A tactical team, quiet and efficient, moved into position. The silence was broken only by the distant caw of a crow.

Then, the lead officer signaled.

A battering ram struck the front door with a sickening thud. The wood splintered, the frame groaning. Another strike. And another. The door finally gave way, swinging inward with a crash.

“Police! Clear!” a voice boomed, echoing through the empty halls.

I stayed outside, watching the shadows flicker as the officers entered. I heard muffled shouts, the thud of heavy boots, then a frustrated roar that I instantly recognized as Julian’s. He was still inside. He was fighting them.

Minutes stretched into an eternity. My stomach churned. This wasn’t about the media network now, not just about money. It was about a man consumed by his own power, refusing to let go.

Finally, two officers emerged, Julian Albright between them. His eyes were wild, his face flushed with rage and disbelief. His shirt was torn, his hair disheveled.

“This is an outrage!” he screamed, struggling against their grip. “Nora, you’ll regret this! You have no idea what you’ve unleashed!”

He tried to lunge towards me, but the officers held him firm. His gaze found mine, burning with a mix of hatred and something I couldn’t quite decipher. Fear? Desperation?

“Julian Albright,” Mr. Hayes, Maya’s senior partner, stepped forward, holding up a stack of documents. “You are hereby served with a civil restraining order, prohibiting you from contact with Nora Delaney and Leo Delaney. Furthermore, your executive proxy over Delaney Media Network and all associated trusts is formally and legally revoked. Any further attempt to interact with these entities will result in immediate arrest.”

Julian stared at the papers, then back at me, his chest heaving. He had lost. And he knew it.

“You think you’ve won?” he snarled, his voice hoarse. “You have no idea what you’ve just walked into, you fool!”

He was pulled towards a waiting cruiser, his protests fading as the door slammed shut. The flashing lights painted the scene in stark, urgent colors.

I watched him go, feeling no satisfaction, only a profound weariness. The physical presence of Julian was removed, but the shadow of his control lingered. His cryptic warning hung in the air, a chilling promise of something more.
