The clatter of Leo’s press badge hitting the polished oak table echoed in the sudden silence of the dining room. Arthur’s practiced smile did not waver, but a subtle tension tightened the air around him.
“This,” Leo said, pointing a finger at the stew, “belongs to Sam Lawson. And I know the official story about the missing tourists is a lie.”
Arthur let out a slow, pitying sigh, shaking his head gently. He gestured towards the large picture window overlooking the porch. Two figures, uniformed and imposing, stepped into view, their faces grim. Deputy Brody was among them.
“Leo, my boy,” Arthur said, his voice laced with concern. “You’ve been driving in that old car of yours for days. We’ve been worried about your health. The engine exhaust often leaks into the cabin on those older models.”
One of the deputies stepped inside. “Mr. Kincaid? We’ve received reports of disoriented behavior. Could be carbon monoxide. It causes confusion, delusions.”
