Eli’s quiet sacrifice weighed heavily on me, deepening my resolve.

Every day, the shadow of Lefty Marino loomed larger.

I knew Eli’s network of diversions wouldn’t hold Art Kincaid off forever.

We were playing a dangerous game, and time was quickly running out.

“We need a plan, Eli,” I said one evening, as we sat in his small office, the only light from a single bare bulb.

“Lefty’s visits are getting bolder. Art knows I’m here. Your payments won’t be enough much longer.”

Eli just grunted, polishing a wrench with a rag.

“Heard your warning,” Eli replied, his voice flat.

“What do you want me to do? Pack up my whole life and disappear?”

“You could,” I suggested, my voice low.

“It’s not worth risking everything. You’ve worked your whole life for this place.”

Eli looked around his cluttered office, at the stacks of invoices, the framed photos of old, forgotten trucks.

“This is my life, Sarah,” he said, tapping the wrench against the desk.

“I’m not running. Never have, never will.”

His stubbornness was admirable, and terrifying.

He was willing to face down Art Kincaid to protect me.

I spent my nights poring over every detail of his finances, looking for any edge, any leverage, anything that could help us.

I scanned old newspaper clippings about the Kincaid family, desperately trying to find a weakness.

The days bled into each other, each one bringing with it a heightened sense of impending doom.

Then, the phone rang.

It was late, long after Eli had gone home, and the yard was eerily silent.

The caller ID showed “Unknown Number.”

My heart pounded against my ribs.

I hesitated, then picked it up.

“Hello?” I whispered, my voice barely audible.

There was a moment of silence on the other end, then a shaky breath.

“Sarah? Is that you?”

The voice was thin, reedy, barely recognizable, but the raw terror in it was unmistakable.

It was Maria Sanchez.

“Maria? Where are you? Are you okay?” I asked, my grip tightening on the phone.

Her voice was almost a sob.

“I can’t talk long. He knows, Sarah. Art knows everything.”

“Knows what?” I pressed, my mind racing.

“What are you talking about?”

“About Eli,” Maria choked out, her voice trembling violently.

“About him harboring you. He’s furious. Absolutely furious.”

A cold knot formed in my stomach.

“What’s he going to do?” I asked, dread creeping into every syllable.

“He’s planning something big,” Maria gasped, her words tumbling out in a rush.

“Not just to get you. To make an example. A public lesson.”

“A public lesson? What does that mean?”

“Vance Salvage,” she whispered, her voice cracking.

“He’s going to… take it back. Destroy it. For daring to protect you.”

The words hit me like a physical blow.

My breath caught in my throat.

Maria was barely coherent now, her fear overriding any attempt at calm.

“He wants to show everyone what happens when they cross him. When they defy the family.”

“When? How?” I demanded, desperate for details.

“Maria, please, you have to tell me more!”

“I can’t, I can’t,” she whimpered, “He’ll kill me if he finds out I called.”

Her breathing was ragged, punctuated by what sounded like muffled sobs.

“He’s coming for the yard, Sarah. He’s coming to take everything Eli has.”

There was a sudden, muffled sound on her end, like something falling, then a sharp, terrified gasp.

“Maria? Are you there?” I pleaded, but the line went dead.

Just like that, silence.

I stared at the phone in my hand, my body rigid with shock.

The chilling, specific threat hung in the air, a phantom presence in the quiet office.

Art wasn’t just coming for me.

He was coming for Eli, for his entire livelihood.

To make an example.

A public lesson.

My hands began to shake uncontrollably.

I knew Art was ruthless, but this… this was a level of vindictive destruction I hadn’t fully comprehended.

Eli’s stubborn loyalty, his refusal to back down, was about to cost him everything.

And I was the reason.
