The coordinates Dusty gave me burned in my mind. But before I could drive out there, I knew I had to address the escalating media storm. Victoria’s PR strategist, Harrison Finch, was relentless. The fabricated claims of my “cognitive decline” were now national headlines, painted with mock-sincere concern for “the missing heir and his aging, confused grandfather.”

I decided to confront Finch directly. I drove to the gleaming glass-and-steel corporate headquarters building downtown, a stark contrast to the raw, untamed forests I had just left. The lobby was a symphony of hushed efficiency and expensive suits.

Harrison Finch stepped out of an elevator, a smug look on his face as he talked into a Bluetooth earpiece. He spotted me immediately. His eyes, though, didn’t show surprise, only a flicker of annoyance. He lowered his phone.

“Mr. Lindqvist,” he drawled, a condescending smile playing on his lips. “To what do we owe this… personal visit?”

He glanced at his watch. “I’m a very busy man, overseeing the ‘urgent response’ to your rather unfortunate situation.”

“You know exactly why I’m here, Finch,” I said, stepping closer. “You’re poisoning the public against me. You’re lying. I know where Victoria was yesterday morning.”

Finch raised an eyebrow, a theatrical gesture. “Oh? And where was that, pray tell? Because our internal logs show Ms. Hallowell was at the estate, coordinating search efforts with police, a truly tireless effort on her part.”

“She was at the Old Man’s Gorge turnoff,” I stated, my voice low and firm. “At 5 AM. A logger saw her luxury SUV parked right at the edge of the ravine.”

Finch let out a soft, dismissive chuckle. “A ‘logger,’ you say? An eyewitness account from a man who likely had too many PBRs for breakfast? Hardly compelling, Mr. Lindqvist.”

He pulled out his own smartphone, a sleek, expensive model, and typed rapidly. He didn’t even look at me.

“Frankly, Arthur,” he continued, his tone dripping with mock sympathy, “your increasingly erratic behavior, your wild accusations… it’s all rather textbook for a man experiencing significant cognitive decline.”

He tapped a few more times on his phone, then held it up, displaying a blurry image of what looked like a medical file. “And these rather unfortunate, highly confidential medical records confirming your progressive dementia? They certainly don’t help your case, do they?”

My jaw tightened. “Those records are fabricated.”

“Are they?” Finch’s smile widened. “A desperate claim from a desperate man. Funny how conveniently they ‘surface’ now, isn’t it? Just as we’re preparing a public statement about your… diminished capacity.”

He put his phone away, a look of triumph on his face. “The press will have these in moments. Consider it an escalation, Arthur. You want to fight dirty? We’ll fight dirtier.”

Before I could respond, his phone vibrated. He glanced at the screen, a genuine, delighted smirk spreading across his face.

“Ah, and there it is,” he murmured. “National news. ‘Elderly Landlord’s Dementia Confirmed Amidst Grandson’s Disappearance.’ Lovely.”

He turned and strode towards the elevator, leaving me standing alone in the pristine lobby, the hum of the air conditioning a mocking backdrop to my growing desperation. He had just weaponized my health, twisting it into a public spectacle, and the clock was ticking faster than ever.
