Chapter 12: A Long Time Later

The air hissed as the antivenom entered Julian’s bloodstream, a clear liquid replacing the dark venom. I watched his face for any immediate adverse reaction, my hand still resting on his arm, feeling the tremor gradually subside.

His breathing slowly deepened, the frantic rhythm calming. The pale flush in his face began to recede, replaced by a slight, sickly yellow.

I pulled away the empty syringe, sealing it carefully in a biohazard bag. The silence in the vault was profound, broken only by Julian’s shuddering gasps. He lay still, staring at the ceiling, his eyes now just distant and glazed.

“Why, Julian?” I finally asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Twenty million dollars for fake safety permits. Why take that risk?”

He didn’t answer immediately. A lone tear tracked a path through the grime on his cheek. His uninjured hand, which had been clutching his arm, now lay limply on the floor.

“The studio,” he finally rasped, his voice raw, thick with a mix of shame and residual fear. “The show was a hit, but the overhead… the constant upgrades. *Wild Stunts Hollywood* needed bigger stunts, more exotic animals, always something new.”

He pushed himself up slowly, leaning against the cold concrete wall, his eyes fixed on nothing in particular.

“We bought out those old contracts, remember?” he continued. “Millions. And the tax deferrals dried up last quarter. We were underwater by almost six million dollars, Elena. Six million!”

He shook his head, a hollow laugh escaping him. “The investors, the network, the bank loans… they were all breathing down my neck. Garry Oaks presented it as a solution. A temporary bridge loan, he called it. The fraudulent rider was just ‘security’ against a temporary lapse.”

“Temporary lapses don’t involve un-milked king cobras and forged permits,” I pointed out, my voice still steady. “Especially not when it endangers lives.”

He winced, pulling his knees up to his chest, his head dropping into his hands.

“I know,” he mumbled, the words muffled. “I know. It escalated. Oaks knew Douglas. They had a system. I thought I could manage it, bring it back… but it just got deeper.”

He lifted his head, his eyes meeting mine. They were still wide, but the terror was gone, replaced by a profound, vacant remorse.

“Thank you,” he said, the words barely audible. “You saved my life.”

I didn’t respond. The encrypted drive was still warm in my hand. It was time to act.
