Chapter 12: A Long Time Later

The State Prosecutor’s office smelled of stale coffee and old paper. It was a stark contrast to the sterile environment of my lab or the manufactured glamour of the studio.

I sat across from Prosecutor Anya Sharma, a woman with sharp eyes and an even sharper mind. The unshredded insurance rider, secured in a clear evidence bag, lay on her desk, a silent accusation. The encrypted drive rested beside it.

“This is a significant amount of fraud, Dr. Navarro,” Prosecutor Sharma said, tapping a pen against the documents. “Twenty million dollars on the face of it, but with potential wider implications.”

“Julian Carver is prepared to make a full confession,” I stated, keeping my voice even. “He’s agreed to complete legal submission and cooperation with your office, including the identification of all involved parties.”

Prosecutor Sharma raised an eyebrow. “Julian Carver, the co-executive producer of *Wild Stunts Hollywood*? That’s quite a celebrity scalp.”

“He was bitten by a king cobra, due to his own negligence and fraud,” I explained, omitting the details of how he ended up in the pit. “I saved his life under the condition of full legal surrender.”

She nodded slowly, processing the information. “A pre-trial diversion program could be an option, given his cooperation and lack of prior offenses. It would involve restitution and accountability, but avoid a lengthy public trial.”

“That is my preference,” I confirmed. “I want to see the fraudulent activities exposed and stopped, not just one man jailed.”

“And the others involved?” she probed. “Garry Oaks, the independent insurance adjuster, and Commissioner Douglas from Municipal Wildlife Safety, correct?”

“Yes,” I affirmed. “Julian’s encrypted drive contains evidence of their involvement—bribes, falsified permits, and illegal animal procurement.”

She leaned back in her chair, a thoughtful expression on her face. “This could be a broad administrative and criminal investigation. Mr. Oaks and Commissioner Douglas won’t have the option of diversion.”

“Good,” I said, a flicker of satisfaction running through me. “They enabled this. They deserve to face the consequences.”

Prosecutor Sharma picked up the phone. “Get me Assistant District Attorney Miller,” she instructed the receiver. “We have a major wildlife fraud case, involving a celebrity producer, two public officials, and a rather compelling whistleblower.”

The gears of the justice system had begun to turn.
