You’re just back-office support, Clara, so you’ll stay in Chicago while the executive team flies to Rome, my boss, Julian Kincaid, told me before leaving for his sister's $1.4 million villa wedding.

Chapter 18: Birthday in Chicago

The murmur of conversation in the grand ballroom continued, but a subtle shift in the atmosphere began to ripple through the room. High-ranking guests, their smiles a little tighter, exchanged glances.

At the head table, Sofia Rossi, the Chief Risk Officer for the European syndicate, excused herself abruptly from a conversation with Julian’s sister, Evelyn. Her eyes, usually placid, held a sharp, discerning glint as she pulled out her phone.

Moments later, Marcus Brody, the lead European Lender Representative, a man whose cold demeanor matched his institutional ties, received an urgent notification on his own device. He glanced at his phone, his expression unreadable, then folded his arms.

The immediate pre-authorization payout of $18 million, scheduled to be released during Julian’s closing toast later that evening, was now frozen.

Julian, meanwhile, was mid-conversation with a key investor, gesturing expansively towards a large map of Europe. His phone vibrated insistently in his pocket.

He pulled it out, a flicker of annoyance crossing his face. His eyes scanned the screen, and his confident posture stiffened. An urgent alert flashed: “Liquidity Line Locked. Compliance Review Pending.”

He frowned, then shook his head subtly, dismissing it as a temporary technical glitch. His focus was still on the expansion, on the glory of his impending deal. He slipped the phone back into his pocket, forcing a smile for the investor.

He didn’t connect the lock with Toby, much less with me. He just saw an inconvenient delay. He likely assumed a minor administrative oversight, something to be cleared up with a quick call to his Chicago team.

I watched him from my table, my expression serene. The compliance flag had done its job. The gears of a much larger machine were beginning to turn.

You’re just back-office support, Clara, so you’ll stay in Chicago while the executive team flies to Rome, my boss, Julian Kincaid, told me before leaving for his sister's $1.4 million villa wedding.
