Chapter 4: The Lobby Collapse

#content-1

Before Arthur could even consider his next move regarding Clause 14-D, a sudden, piercing shriek echoed through the main hospital atrium. He and Chloe rushed out of the quiet archive, the distant sounds of panic growing louder with every step. The grand marble lobby, usually a serene space, was now a scene of chaos.

Julian stood frozen by the main desk, his face ashen, pointing a trembling finger at the floor. His six-year-old daughter, Maya, lay still on the polished marble, a small, vulnerable figure. A pool of dark liquid was spreading beneath her.

Dr. Elena Kowalski, the on-call Chief of Surgery, sprinted across the lobby, her movements quick and decisive. She knelt beside Maya, her fingers immediately at the child’s pulse. Her brow furrowed, and she quickly assessed the situation.

“Acute pediatric hepatic failure,” Dr. Kowalski barked, her voice cutting through the rising murmurs. “Get her to Trauma Bay 3, now! We need a full workup and a STAT donor match!”

Julian stumbled forward, his knees nearly giving out. “Maya? What’s happening?” he choked out, his eyes wide with terror.

Dr. Kowalski looked up, her expression grim.

“Mr. Pendelton, Dr. Pendelton,” she said, her gaze sweeping between father and son. “Your daughter has less than two hours. Without a compatible liver tissue match, her systemic failure will become fatal.”

The words hung in the air, cold and definitive. The vast expanse of the lobby suddenly felt impossibly small, closing in on Arthur. The legal battle, the financial sabotage—all of it faded into insignificance as the life of his granddaughter hung by the thinnest of threads.
