Chapter 9: A Quiet Ache

The information from David Chen had been devastating, yet empowering. It solidified Mark’s villainy, providing a historical pattern for his current predatory scheme. He was a creature of habit, preying on vulnerability. And now, I knew enough to anticipate his next desperate move.

I knew he wouldn’t give up easily. He’d be feeling the pressure. My unwavering refusal to let Sarah sign, Dr. Reed’s quiet but firm presence, and the sheer passage of time since Lily’s birth – all of it was creating an unbearable squeeze on Mark. He had likely promised Robert Harrison an immediate breakthrough, a quick win. The longer he waited, the more his lies would unravel.

I called Dr. Reed, explaining in carefully chosen words about David Chen and Mark’s past. She listened intently, her face grim. “Ellie, this is deeply concerning. If he’s desperate, he might try something drastic to get Lily’s samples. We need to be vigilant.”

“He already tried to record Sarah,” I told her, my voice tight. “And he knows we’re on to him about the consent form. What’s his next step to get what he wants?”

Dr. Reed sighed. “Unauthorized access to samples is a serious breach. It’s rare, but desperate individuals… sometimes attempt to bribe staff, forge documents, try to get samples after hours.” She paused. “It’s a long shot, but if he knew the layout of the hospital, he might try the labs on a night shift.”

A cold certainty settled over me. That was it. He wouldn’t be able to charm his way into getting a legitimate sample. He’d go through the back door.

“Is there any way to monitor the labs, especially after hours?” I asked.

Dr. Reed hesitated. “All our labs have security cameras, of course, and staff are trained in protocols. But it’s always possible for someone to slip through, or for a new tech not to recognize a forged document.” She looked at me, a flicker of understanding in her eyes. “Are you suggesting… we set a trap?”

I didn’t answer directly. “Just be aware,” I said. “He’s desperate, and he’s calculating.”

She nodded. “I’ll make sure the night supervisor and lab techs are briefed. They’ll be on high alert for anyone attempting unusual access, or anyone presenting suspicious documents.”

Days later, my hunch was proven terrifyingly accurate. It was just after midnight. I had finally managed to drift off in the armchair next to Sarah’s bed when my phone vibrated. Dr. Reed’s name flashed on the screen.

“Ellie, you were right,” she whispered, her voice a mix of awe and anger. “He tried it. Mark Holloway. He was in the central lab at 12:15 AM.”

I sat bolt upright, my heart hammering. “Is Lily safe? Did he get anything?”

“No, thankfully, he didn’t,” she assured me. “Our night technician, Maria Rodriguez, she’s a veteran, sharp as a tack. Mark tried to bribe her.”

I could almost see it unfold. Mark, slick and confident, probably assuming a tired night tech would be easy pickings.

“He approached Maria with a crude, obviously forged consent form, demanding Lily’s blood samples for an ‘urgent retest’ he claimed was ordered by an ‘out-of-town specialist’,” Dr. Reed continued, relaying the report she’d just received. “He even tried to offer her five hundred dollars in cash. Said it was for her ‘trouble.'”

Five hundred dollars. A paltry sum for the damage he was attempting, but in Mark’s desperate mind, perhaps enough to sway someone.

“Maria, bless her, played along just long enough to activate the silent alarm to security,” Dr. Reed said, a note of triumph in her voice. “She pretended to go look for the samples while security was dispatched. When they arrived, Mark was still there, attempting to negotiate. He tried to claim he was just ‘checking on a concern’ for his daughter.”

“Was it caught on camera?” I asked, a crucial question.

“Every second of it,” Dr. Reed confirmed. “The central lab is a high-security area. Not only did our standard cameras get him clearly, but the interaction at the counter was captured by a discreet, high-resolution camera we use specifically to monitor interactions with controlled substances. You can see the cash in his hand, the forged document, everything.”

A wave of relief washed over me, quickly followed by a cold, hard anger. He was utterly without shame. This wasn’t just desperate; it was criminal. Attempted bribery, forging medical documents, attempting to steal patient samples. This was a man spiraling, taking increasingly reckless risks.

“What did security do?” I asked.

“They escorted him out, told him he was no longer permitted in restricted areas, and warned him that any further attempts would result in an immediate arrest for trespassing and attempted theft of medical property,” she explained. “They filed a full report. It’s all logged, Ellie. And the footage is secured.”

“Good,” I said, a grim satisfaction settling in my chest. This was solid, undeniable evidence. David Chen’s testimony was powerful, but security footage of Mark attempting bribery was irrefutable. It removed all plausible deniability.

“I’m also speaking with Maria tomorrow morning, getting her sworn statement,” Dr. Reed added. “She’s shaken but firm. She knows she did the right thing.”

“She did,” I agreed. “She protected Lily.”

I hung up, my mind racing. Mark’s desperation was a double-edged sword. It made him predictable, but it also made him more dangerous. He was losing control, but that meant he might lash out in other ways. He couldn’t get to Lily through official channels, he couldn’t charm Sarah into signing, and he couldn’t bribe his way in. What would his next move be? He wouldn’t simply vanish. He was too deep in debt, too arrogant to admit defeat.

I looked at Sarah, still sleeping soundly. Her recovery remained slow. She was eating better, but her energy was low, and the shadow of anxiety still clung to her. She still hadn’t fully connected with Lily, her maternal instincts dulled by the exhaustion and the constant fear. It broke my heart. This ordeal was stealing precious moments from her, moments that could never be reclaimed. Lily deserved a calm, peaceful start to life, and Sarah deserved the joy of new motherhood. Mark was robbing them both.

I knew he would try to undermine me next. To discredit me. To turn someone against me. He had always been good at turning people against each other, particularly within families. His charm was a veneer he used to manipulate, and when direct tactics failed, he always resorted to psychological warfare. There was only one person in our family he could possibly target who would be gullible enough to believe his twisted version of events. My sister, Carol.

A cold shiver ran down my spine. The thought of my own sister becoming a pawn in Mark’s cruel game filled me with a fresh wave of dread. But I would be ready. He wouldn’t catch me off guard again.
