Her Abusive Fiancé Was About To Be Honored, But Her Billionaire Boss Saw Her Bruises And Decided To Expose Him
Maria Sanchez adjusted the strap of her purse, her gaze lingering on the closed door of Dr. Croft’s office. The conversation she’d overheard between Dr. Croft and Officer Chen still replayed in her mind, a sickening loop of threats and veiled intentions. She’d seen Eleanor looking increasingly worn, the subtle changes in her demeanor almost imperceptible to anyone not paying close attention. Maria, however, noticed everything.
She had witnessed the careful, almost invisible way Eleanor covered a faint bruise on her wrist with a long sleeve just this morning. Maria’s conscience, long dulled by the grind of her job and the fear of Dr. Croft’s power, was slowly stirring. She knew she had to speak to Eleanor, despite her own fear.
After work, Maria waited, tucked away near the employee entrance, until she saw Eleanor emerge. Eleanor looked tired, her shoulders slumped, clutching a large tote bag. Maria took a deep breath, steeling herself, and stepped forward.
“Eleanor, could I have a quick word?”
Eleanor jumped slightly, startled, then forced a polite smile.
“Maria. Of course.” Her eyes, however, held a wary, almost hunted look.
Maria’s heart ached for her.
“I’ve been meaning to talk to you,” Maria began, her voice quiet. “I’ve noticed… certain irregularities in Dr. Croft’s methods. And not just with patient files. Things he says. Ways he behaves.”
Eleanor’s smile tightened, almost imperceptibly. She shifted her weight, pulling her tote bag closer, as if physically shielding herself.
“Maria, I appreciate your concern,” Eleanor said, her voice flat, devoid of warmth. “But Dr. Croft is a demanding man. He expects perfection. There’s nothing truly irregular, just his usual high standards.”
Maria hesitated, trying to find the right words, to convey the gravity of what she suspected without directly accusing.
“It’s more than that, Eleanor,” Maria pressed softly, glancing around the empty hallway to ensure privacy. “Some of the patterns I’ve observed… with former partners, even. And the way he speaks to Officer Chen about you…”
Eleanor’s face visibly stiffened. Her eyes, which had held a flicker of something close to curiosity, now slammed shut, barricaded by fear.
“Maria, please,” Eleanor interrupted, her voice suddenly sharp. “I really don’t think this is appropriate. Dr. Croft’s personal life is not something we should be discussing. And I certainly haven’t had any ‘public disturbances,’ so whatever you heard about Officer Chen, it must be a misunderstanding.”
The outright denial, the immediate deflection, cut Maria off. It was clear Eleanor wasn’t ready to hear it. Maria felt a wave of discouragement wash over her. She saw the raw fear in Eleanor’s eyes, the way her hand trembled slightly as she clutched her bag. Eleanor, Maria realized, was too deep in her fear, too afraid of exposure to accept help.
Maria nodded slowly, her shoulders slumping.
“You’re right,” Maria said, her voice heavy with resignation. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have bothered you.”
Eleanor offered a small, dismissive nod, already turning away.
“It’s quite all right,” Eleanor replied, walking away quickly, leaving Maria standing alone in the quiet hallway.
Maria watched her go, a sense of failure weighing heavily on her. She had tried, but Eleanor’s fear had been too strong. It was a tangible thing, a cage of Dr. Croft’s making, trapping Eleanor and making her blind to the outstretched hand. Maria worried that Eleanor was too afraid to accept any help.
She clutched her own purse, feeling the thinness of her wallet, the bills she had to pay. Her fear of Dr. Croft, of losing her job and her livelihood, was real too. It was a suffocating thing, a shared burden among those caught in Croft’s orbit. Maria walked out into the evening air, the weight of Eleanor’s unspoken troubles, and her own complicity, pressing down on her.
