I shook off the security guard’s hand, my eyes locked on Mark. Julian watched us, his face a thundercloud.

“I’m going to speak with my brother,” I announced, turning my back on Julian and the dwindling press.

The security guards hesitated, clearly receiving conflicting orders through their earpieces. Julian, still fuming from the interrupted broadcast, finally waved them off, probably realizing that another public scene would only further damage his carefully constructed image.

I walked quickly towards Mark, weaving through stacks of equipment cases and coiled cables near the catering tents. He met me halfway, his expression a mix of concern and focused determination.

“Elena,” he said, his voice hushed. He pulled me into a quick, tight hug. “You okay?”

I nodded, gripping his arm. “As okay as I can be. Any news?”

Mark led me towards the back of a large truck, where the shadows offered some privacy. He unzipped his duffel bag, pulling out a thick manila envelope and a small, worn notebook.

“I started digging as soon as I got your text,” he said, his eyes darting around to ensure no one was listening. “Julian’s recent financial movements were… interesting. Six weeks ago, he took out a $10 million child insurance policy.”

My breath hitched. “A child insurance policy? For Toby?”

Mark nodded gravely. “Yup. A policy only payable in the event of accidental death or permanent disappearance. He listed himself as the sole beneficiary.”

The desert air suddenly felt impossibly cold. Ten million dollars. Toby was just a child. This wasn’t an accident. It was a plan.

“Mark, this is… this is insane,” I whispered, the words barely escaping my lips.

“It gets worse,” he said, flipping open his notebook. “While I was digging into Julian’s corporate shell companies – he’s got quite a few – I got a call. A strange one, at first.”

He looked up, his gaze intense. “From a woman named Gretchen Reynolds. She said she used to be a stunt coordinator on Julian’s earlier projects. Said she’d been watching the news, heard about Toby, and had a ‘gut feeling’.”

Just then, a woman with close-cropped gray hair and weathered skin emerged from behind the catering tent. She moved with an athletic grace that belied her age. This had to be Gretchen.

“Elena, this is Gretchen Reynolds,” Mark introduced, gesturing towards her. “Gretchen, my sister, Elena.”

Gretchen offered me a firm handshake. Her eyes were sharp, intelligent.

“Ms. Drake,” she said, her voice raspy but clear. “I’m so sorry about your son. And about what Julian is putting you through.”

“What did you tell Mark?” I asked, my voice still shaky from the insurance revelation.

Gretchen’s jaw tightened. “Julian Becket has a history, Ms. Drake. A long one. He’s always been obsessed with ‘controlled chaos’ on his sets. But sometimes… his ‘accidents’ weren’t so accidental.”

She paused, taking a deep breath. “Years ago, on a big-budget action film Julian was producing, there was a stunt gone wrong. A controlled explosion was… less controlled than it should have been. A stuntman was badly injured. Paralyzed, actually.”

My blood ran cold. “What happened?”

“Julian claimed equipment malfunction, a freak accident,” Gretchen explained. “But I was on set. I saw him talking to the pyro tech, right before it happened. Saw him point to a specific charge, heard him say, ‘Make it count. Max impact.’ Then, after, he paid off the tech, silenced him.”

She clenched her fists. “The studio hushed it up. Julian’s lawyers buried it. But I kept copies of the internal incident reports. And I kept the flight logs for Julian’s private chopper. He used to scout locations for his ‘big’ stunts himself, always with a personal GPS unit. He’d disappear for hours into remote spots. And sometimes, he’d turn his transponder off.”

This was it. The link. The pattern. Julian wasn’t just a controlling husband; he was a calculated predator.

“He does this,” I said, a dawning horror settling over me. “He stages these ‘accidents’ for a payout, for control.”

Gretchen nodded grimly. “For power, for money. He leaves a trail, if you know where to look. Always has.”

Mark pulled out a laminated sheet from the envelope. “Gretchen suggested we look at the location scout GPS logs from this morning. Especially any anomalies.”

My gaze snapped to Gretchen. “Can you do it? Can you pinpoint where Julian was?”

She met my eyes, her resolve firm. “Give me the data, and I’ll find it. Julian Becket left more than breadcrumbs this time.”
