Garrett stared out the window, his breath fogging the glass. His eyes darted from one dark, armed figure to the next. Hank Brody, solid as a rock, stood at the forefront, his gaze unwavering, fixed on the lodge. The other seven men had positioned themselves strategically, their rifles glinting faintly in the dim light filtering through the snow-laden sky.

“They’re… they’re outside?” Garrett whispered, his voice hoarse with disbelief. “In this blizzard? How did they even get here?”

“They’re my father’s men, Garrett,” I said, a cold edge to my voice. “They know this land better than anyone. They’ve been through worse storms than this.”

Silas Finch, who had been trying to make himself invisible, suddenly found his voice. “Mr. Hollister, this is… this is highly irregular. They’re armed! This could be a federal offense!”

Garrett spun around, his face pale. He still clutched his rifle, but it looked more like a prop than a weapon of intimidation now. The tables had turned.

“Federal offense?” Garrett scoffed, though his voice lacked conviction. “They’re just old men, Maeve. They can’t do anything.”

“They’re the original Blackwood Ridge Ranch Security Council, Garrett,” I corrected him, picking up the 1984 trust document again. “And according to Section 9B, Subsection Four, they have the legal right to veto your entire sale. Every single one of them. And they’re here. All eight of them.”

A faint hum reached us from outside, a mechanical groan followed by a distant clatter. Garrett’s head snapped towards the sound. He knew what it meant. His escape.

“What was that?” he demanded, his eyes wide.

I allowed a grim smile. “That, Garrett, would be Hank’s men disabling your snowmobiles. And Toby’s. And Silas’s. Nobody’s leaving this lodge until this is resolved. Privately.”

Panic flared in Garrett’s eyes. He made a desperate lunge towards the door, clearly intending to rush outside, to confront them, or perhaps to make a futile dash for an intact vehicle.

“Don’t even think about it,” I warned, my voice sharp. “They’re not here to hurt you, unless you give them a reason. They’re here to enforce the trust. To protect the land my father dedicated his life to. And they are very, very good at their job.”

He hesitated, his hand on the doorknob. He knew. He’d heard the stories of my father’s “Ironclad Guard.” These weren’t mere ranch hands; they were hardened individuals, veterans, loyal to a code.

Garrett slowly pulled his hand back, defeated. He walked back towards the fireplace, dropping his rifle onto the plush rug with a clatter. The sound felt deafening in the suddenly quiet room.

“You really think this will hold up?” he growled, his voice low and dangerous. “I’ll have a battery of lawyers here by morning. They’ll shred this ‘trust’ and those old men.”

“They won’t get here by morning, Garrett,” I countered calmly. “The road’s completely impassable for the next forty-eight hours, maybe more. You know that. And by the time they do, this will be over. One way or another.”

I walked over to him, standing just a few feet away. The heat from the fireplace was a stark contrast to the cold calculation in my voice.

“Here are my terms, Garrett,” I began, my eyes fixed on his. “You will surrender all corporate authority. You will permanently exit Hollister Agribusiness. And you will do it without a single public word about this night. No lawsuits, no press, no scandal that ruins the Hollister name.”

He stared at me, his face a mask of disbelief. “You’re insane. I’m Senior Managing Partner. I have board support.”

“You had board support for a fraudulent land deal based on a corrupt appraisal,” I corrected him, gesturing towards a cowering Silas. “Which is about to unravel. And you tried to strong-arm me at gunpoint in an isolated lodge. If any of that gets out, Garrett, your career is finished, your reputation destroyed, and the Hollister name will be dragged through the mud. Which is something our family, for all its faults, has always tried to avoid.”

His eyes narrowed. He knew I was right. The board cared about appearances, about profit. But they also cared about avoiding scandal, especially one involving a family member brandishing a hunting rifle and a clear breach of corporate ethics.

He was encircled. Not just by men, but by an unbreakable legal wall and the threat of public humiliation. He had walked into his own trap. And now, I was setting the terms of his surrender.
