The days following the phone call were a blur of escalating tension. Silas’s campaign against me reached a fever pitch. He orchestrated “interventions” with the elders, where I was forced to sit in silence while they prayed over my “troubled spirit.” Eli was kept from me for longer periods, under the guise of “spiritual healing.”

“He needs to be cleansed of this confusion,” Silas would say, his eyes never leaving mine. “Your influence troubles his soul.”

I endured it all, a silent statue, my gaze fixed on the compound’s main gates. Every sound, every distant vehicle, made my heart leap.

Then, one crisp Tuesday morning, it happened. I was in the communal kitchen, stirring a pot of thin gruel, when a ripple of whispers spread through the women. One of them pointed towards the main gate.

“Cars,” she breathed, her voice trembling. “So many cars.”

I walked to the window, my breath catching in my throat. Two large, dark SUVs, federal vehicles undoubtedly, had stopped just inside the compound’s main entrance. Their doors opened, and men in dark suits emerged. They were followed by two official-looking white vans, marked with the unmistakable eagle insignia of the IRS.

A few compound members, initially curious, began to back away, confusion turning to alarm. Silas, who had been leading a morning scripture reading in the central meeting hall, must have seen them too. His voice, which had been booming, suddenly cut off.

The silence that followed was absolute, heavy with dread. Everyone stared at the men in suits, who were now fanning out, methodical and precise.

One man, taller than the others, with a stern, intelligent face, walked directly towards the meeting hall. This had to be Agent Harlan. He was flanked by two burly men wearing vests that read “U.S. Marshal.”

I felt a surge of triumph, cold and sharp, mix with a deep, unsettling fear. This was it. The reckoning. But what would it truly cost?

Agent Harlan pushed open the heavy double doors of the meeting hall without knocking. The sound echoed through the suddenly hushed space. Silas stood at the front, his face a mask of furious indignation. The congregation, a sea of bewildered faces, remained frozen in their seats.

“Special Agent Harlan, Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division,” Harlan announced, his voice clear and resonant, cutting through the stunned silence. He held up a badge. “We have a federal warrant for the search and seizure of financial records for The Covenant of the New Dawn and associated entities.”

He gestured to the marshals. “Everyone is to remain seated. Do not attempt to leave the premises. Any obstruction will be met with immediate arrest.”

The marshals moved quickly, positioning themselves at the exits. The other agents began systematically approaching the smaller buildings, carrying boxes and clipboards. One headed directly for Martha’s office.

Silas, his face now purple with rage, took a step forward. “This is an outrage! This is a house of God! You have no right to desecrate our sacred space!”

His voice thundered, attempting to rally his bewildered flock. But the sight of the federal agents, so official, so unyielding, held them captive. No one moved. No one spoke. The sheer authority in Harlan’s posture, the weight of the federal presence, was undeniable.

I watched from the kitchen doorway, my hands still gripping the wooden spoon, knuckles white. Eli, attracted by the sudden quiet, peered out from behind me, his eyes wide.

The world we knew, for better or worse, was about to shatter.
