Chapter 9: Echoes

With Seraphina’s confession, the pieces clicked into place with horrifying clarity. Julian hadn’t just targeted me and Vivian; he had subtly poisoned the waters with Seraphina too, ensuring that even my daughter felt a complicated loyalty to him.

Cassian Davies called me later that evening. “Elara, I’ve been hitting some dead ends on the mainstream gossip sites. Julian was good at burying his tracks.”

“I told you he was arrogant,” I reminded him. “He’ll have left something.”

“I’ve widened my net,” Cassian said, a note of excitement in his voice. “I’m going way back. To before your estrangement. To obscure fan forums, old bulletin boards, anywhere Vivian Lockhart’s name might have been discussed.”

“Sixteen years ago,” I mused. “That’s a long time. People delete things.”

“True,” he agreed. “But some corners of the internet are like digital fossils. Preserved, if you know where to dig.”

The next few days felt excruciatingly long. I divided my time between the hospital, where Seraphina was slowly regaining her strength and Lucas was thriving, and my own apartment, where I worked feverishly with Cassian over encrypted video calls. My leg wound ached constantly, but the pain was a dull backdrop to the sharp intensity of my search.

Then, a breakthrough.

“Elara,” Cassian’s voice crackled through the speaker, breathless with excitement. “You’re not going to believe what I found.”

“What is it?” I demanded, my heart leaping.

“An old fan forum,” he explained. “Vivian Lockhart’s Golden Age Glamour, or something equally cheesy. Defunct now, but archived by some obsessive fan from twenty years ago. And guess who was a prolific poster?”

“Julian,” I whispered, a cold certainty settling over me.

“Bingo,” Cassian confirmed. “Under the pseudonym ‘HollywoodInsider1970’. He was active on it for years, mostly posting sycophantic praise for Vivian. But then, about sixteen years ago, right around the time you told me the estrangement happened, his tone shifted.”

“How so?”

“He started posting… stories,” Cassian said, his voice dropping, “about Vivian’s ‘rebellious daughter.’ He depicted you as financially irresponsible, constantly borrowing money from Vivian, making poor investments in ‘artsy fartsy’ projects that yielded no returns.”

My blood ran cold. The very narrative Julian had tried to sell to Sera. It was an old playbook.

“He painted you as erratic,” Cassian continued, clicking away on his keyboard. “Said you had ‘reckless tendencies,’ that you were ’emotionally unstable’ and prone to dramatic outbursts. He even hinted at some ‘dark secrets’ from your past, though he never elaborated.”

I stared at the screen, a screenshot appearing before me. A forum post, dated sixteen years ago, clear as day.

*HollywoodInsider1970: “It’s a shame when talent is squandered by personal demons. Certain ‘documentary filmmakers’ are bleeding our beloved Vivian dry with their endless requests for funds for their vanity projects. Such a pity she’s too kind to say no. Someone needs to step in and protect her assets from her own family’s reckless behavior.”*

The words were a dagger to my heart. “He was talking about me.”

“Absolutely,” Cassian affirmed. “The timing aligns perfectly with your estrangement. He was systematically undermining your character, poisoning the perception of you to anyone who might have been listening, even in this obscure corner of the internet.”

“He fabricated it all,” I said, a wave of profound nausea washing over me. “The financial irresponsibility, the erratic behavior… it was all lies.”

“And not just for public consumption,” Cassian added, scrolling down. “He regularly ‘leaked’ these same stories, framed as ‘concerns for Vivian’s well-being,’ to other users on the forum who were known to be Vivian’s close, protective fans. He was building a consensus, turning them against you.”

“He was the architect,” I said, the words heavy in my mouth. “He orchestrated the entire estrangement. He made sure Vivian’s closest circle, even her fans, saw me as a threat to her well-being and her finances.”

“He created the narrative that justified your 16-year absence,” Cassian stated. “He made it seem like it was *your* fault, Elara. That you were the problem.”

The pain of that realization was almost unbearable. Sixteen years. Sixteen years of missed birthdays, holidays, moments with my mother, all stolen by Julian’s malicious campaign. He hadn’t just exploited an existing rift; he had *created* it.

He had whispered poison into the ears of Vivian’s loyalists, making them believe I was a danger to her. And Vivian, perhaps already susceptible to his charms and manipulations, had been caught in his web.

“Did he post anything about Vivian herself?” I asked, my voice raw.

Cassian scrolled again. “Yes. He’d occasionally lament her ‘frail health’ or her ‘struggle with memory,’ even back then. Nothing as direct as he tried to sell to the tabloids recently, but enough to imply a slow decline.”

He was painting a picture of two troubled women: one reckless and unstable (me), the other frail and vulnerable (Vivian). And who was the only strong, reliable man in the picture? Julian, the dutiful son, the protector.

“He was laying the groundwork for years,” I concluded, my jaw clenched. “Building his empire of lies, piece by insidious piece.”

“This is big, Elara,” Cassian said, his voice reverent. “This proves intent. Malice. This isn’t just about a conservatorship anymore. This is about systematic defamation, manipulation, and elder abuse.”

“Can we use this?” I asked, a flicker of hope amidst the heartbreak. “Can we prove it’s him?”

“The IP addresses are long gone, of course,” Cassian replied. “But the content, the consistent pseudonym, the specific details only Julian would know… we can build a very strong circumstantial case. Especially when combined with everything else.”

He paused. “And the timing, Elara. The forum posts stopped abruptly when Vivian started pulling back from public life. He moved from public manipulation to private control.”

I closed my eyes, picturing Julian, charismatic and smiling, always ready with a kind word, a helping hand. And all the while, he had been a serpent, weaving a web of deceit, tearing our family apart from the inside.

This wasn’t just greed; it was pathological envy. He couldn’t stand my success, my connection with Vivian, the fact that she had chosen me to carry on her philanthropic legacy.

He had created the estrangement. He had cultivated the lies. And he had tried to turn my own daughter against me.

What other family secrets did Julian orchestrate from behind a screen? I knew, with a terrifying certainty, that this was just the beginning. The architect of estrangement had built a house of cards, and it was about to come crashing down.
