Word spread quickly through the Hawthorne family network. By Sunday afternoon, the old living room of the main house was packed. Cousins, aunts, uncles, and even a few of the older, loyal farmhands had gathered, their faces a mixture of concern and simmering curiosity. Aunt Clara sat beside me, Samuel on my other side, his presence a stark testament to Victoria’s deception.

The air was thick with the scent of coffee and the uneasy hush of impending judgment. Marcus Broussard stood by the fireplace, his reporter’s notebook open, a stack of documents on the mantelpiece beside him.

Then the front door opened, and Victoria walked in, a wide, confident smile plastered on her face. She wore a tailored linen suit, looking completely at ease, as if she were merely arriving for a celebratory brunch.

“Well, look at everyone,” she chirped, her eyes sweeping over the solemn faces. “To what do we owe this delightful family reunion? Are we finally going to finalize the arrangements for Clara and Eleanor’s… new living situation?”

Her eyes landed on Samuel, then on me. Her smile faltered slightly. She clearly hadn’t expected Samuel to be free.

“And Samuel! You’re looking much better. I was just telling the family how worried I was about your recent decline.” She moved to embrace him, but Samuel recoiled.

“Decline? Or captivity, Victoria?” he said, his voice surprisingly firm.

Victoria’s face hardened, but she quickly recovered, her gaze flicking to the assembled family. “He’s still a bit confused, I’m afraid. The doctors said his episodes could be quite vivid.”

“There are no doctors, Victoria,” I stated, my voice cutting through her pretense. “Only lies.”

Victoria scoffed. “Eleanor, darling, you’re clearly still suffering from the stress of deployment. We can talk about this later, in private, with a medical professional.”

It was then that Marcus stepped forward, clearing his throat. The room fell silent.

“Excuse me, Victoria,” Marcus said, his voice calm but authoritative. “But there are some things the family needs to hear right now. Matters concerning the Hawthorne estate and the well-being of its elders.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed. “And who are you, exactly? A friend of Eleanor’s, I presume? This is a private family matter.”

“My name is Marcus Broussard,” he stated, “and I’m an independent investigative journalist. I’ve been looking into corporate land acquisitions in Beaufort County, and unfortunately, the Hawthorne farm has come up in my research.”

He picked up a document from the mantel. “Victoria, three weeks ago, you purchased six industrial-grade padlocks from Gaines & Sons Hardware. Jim Gaines has confirmed this purchase.”

He held up a receipt. “These locks were used to imprison your Aunt Clara in the basement of this very house, and to secure your Uncle Samuel in the lake cabin.”

A collective gasp rippled through the room. Victoria’s face went white.

“That’s a fabrication!” she cried, her voice cracking. “These two, they’re not well! They’ve always been prone to dramatics!”

Marcus ignored her, holding up Samuel’s crumpled notebook. “And here, in Samuel Hawthorne’s own hand, are detailed accounts of your threats. Your coercion. Your systematic gaslighting of your own family members to force them to sign away their inheritance.”

He then held up the draft land registry document. “Furthermore, I have evidence that you, Victoria Hawthorne, have secretly entered into a preliminary contract to sell this entire 100-acre ancestral estate to a commercial logging corporation for $2.5 million, all while claiming power of attorney due to alleged dementia.”

He looked directly at Victoria, his voice resonating through the shocked silence.

“You fabricated medical notes. You imprisoned your elders. You attempted to sell your family’s land for your own enrichment. All under the guise of concern.”

The room buzzed with whispered indignation. Victoria stood frozen, her tailored suit suddenly looking like a costume. The masks were off. The family council, traditionally reserved for minor disputes, had just witnessed a complete and public unmasking of pure avarice.
