Victoria stood exposed, her face a mask of disbelief and rage. The murmurs in the living room grew louder, turning into angry accusations from various family members. Aunt Clara, usually quiet, now spoke, her voice clear and strong.

“She called me crazy,” Clara said, tears streaming down her face, but her chin held high. “Told me I was seeing things, hearing things. Said Eleanor was losing her mind, too.”

Samuel stepped forward, his eyes burning with a quiet fury. “She came to the cabin, Eleanor. Threatened to put me in a state hospital if I didn’t sign away my part of the farm. Said nobody would believe me.”

Victoria stammered, trying to regain control. “This is a setup! Eleanor, you’re doing this because you’re jealous! You’ve always been jealous!”

Her words fell flat. No one believed her. The evidence Marcus had laid out, combined with Clara’s and Samuel’s testimonies, was overwhelming.

My cousin, Thomas, a respected elder in the community, stood up. He looked at Victoria with a sorrowful, disgusted expression.

“Victoria,” he said, his voice low and heavy, “you have betrayed the trust of this family. You have dishonored your ancestors. You have attempted to steal from your own blood.”

He shook his head slowly. “There is no place for you among us, not with this kind of venom in your heart.”

“You are stripped of all family standing,” I declared, my voice resonating with a strength I hadn’t known I still possessed. It wasn’t just a personal choice; it was a decree. “You will leave this house, this property, and Beaufort County. You will never again claim the name Hawthorne in this community.”

Victoria’s face twisted into a snarl. “You think you can just banish me? I have rights! I’m still your daughter!”

“You forfeited those rights when you locked your aunt in a cage,” I countered, my gaze unwavering. “And when you tried to steal our home.”

Marcus then spoke up, addressing the family. “Given the extent of Victoria’s actions and the clear intent to defraud, any claim she has to any future inheritance from this land or from Eleanor and Samuel can be legally nullified. Furthermore, any attempt by Victoria to profit from the sale of this property can be blocked indefinitely through legal action.”

The collective sigh of relief from the family was almost audible. Victoria looked around, her eyes wild, realizing that not only was her plan ruined, but she was now completely isolated, without a single ally or sympathetic ear.

“You’ll regret this, Eleanor!” she shrieked, her composure finally shattering. “You’ll all regret this!”

But her threats were hollow. The family stared back, their faces firm and resolute. She was no longer one of us. With a final, furious glare, Victoria stormed out of the house, the front door slamming shut behind her, leaving a profound silence in her wake. She left with nothing, not a single cent from the $2.5 million she had so desperately coveted. The family had spoken.

Now, it was my turn to ensure this could never happen again.
