Stunned, I backed out of Arthur’s office, the papers still scattered across his desk. My legs felt like lead as I stumbled into the public lobby and out onto the humid D.C. afternoon air. The street noise, the distant sirens, all sounded muffled, distant.

Before I could even reach the metro station entrance, my smartphone buzzed. Then again. And again. Automated alerts flooded my screen.

“Account Frozen: Federal Compliance Review.” My local bank accounts. All $42,000, locked.

Another notification flashed: “Immediate Eviction Notice – Breach of Lease Conditions.” My apartment. My home.

I looked up. Arthur Pendelton stood on the gleaming glass portico above, framed against the bright sky. He looked down at me, his expression one of serene, almost benevolent, calm. A small, knowing smile played on his lips.
