Chapter 6: The Brownstone Trap

#content-1

👉 Previous Decision: You chose to confront Arthur privately at his brownstone residence.

Under the cover of deepening twilight, I used my duplicate front door key to enter Arthur’s ground-floor apartment in Dupont Circle. The silence inside was heavy, almost suffocating. The air smelled of old paper and something vaguely metallic.

The living room was not what I expected. Instead of a typical residence, floor-to-ceiling shelves lined the walls, packed with political campaign posters spanning three decades. Names, slogans, and faces of forgotten local candidates stared out from behind glass.

I crept towards his study, a sliver of light escaping from beneath the door. Pushing it open, I found a minimalist space dominated by a large, antique wooden desk. On a small monitor in the corner, a grid of live feeds flickered.

My blood ran cold. One of the feeds showed my own living room. Another, my bedroom. He had been monitoring every room in my unit directly upstairs.

My fingers flew across the keyboard, desperately trying to download the monitoring files, to gather any proof. But before I could click save, the study door creaked open further.

Two private security officers, their faces blank, stepped out from the shadows of the hallway. They moved with silent, practiced efficiency, pinning me to the floor before I could react.

Arthur Pendelton entered the study with a quiet sigh, stepping over my struggling body. He held a small, silver syringe in his hand, its needle glinting in the low light.

“Such a predictable choice, Julian,” he murmured, his voice laced with a gentle disappointment. “Always so emotional. Always so confrontational. A quick reset, and we can move past this.”
